From the sounds surrounding us here in Meredith, you could have fooled me that Bike Week was postponed to August. Lots of growling engines tell me that many bikers already had reservations and couldn't or chose not to get out of them. Of course, they are lacking entertainment options but that should be a boon for the restaurants with outside dining during these beautiful nights. if dining establishments can be at 50% capacity indoors, perhaps they can make up the shortfall with their patio dining.
Yet, I doubt a lot of the bikers here this week will be back in August. That week might therefore be lower key than usual. |

I knew a bunch of people who said well we have rented the same house every year this week so it would be hard to cancel and get the same house in August instead. So we are going anyways!

Saw a lot of that last week. Nowhere near a regular bike week, but a lot of folks (especially NH residents) seem to have kept their reservations and came out anyway. And the Wiers had the normal week long engine rumble background noise at about 20%.
Broken Spoke on the 13th (would have been the first Sat of bike week) was packed, bikes, vendors, bbq, etc,. Big as normal? No. Big still very surprising turn out. |

Motorcycle week usually happens in mid-June but was postponed back in the spring and pushed back until the last week of August
No vendors, no beer tents. You can plan on a much smaller crowd. From WMUR: https://www.wmur.com/article/laconia...-week/33304062 |

The City Council effectively cancelled Bike Week without cancelling Bike Week! How very PC of the City!

For $35/person bike-weekers can take a 2 1/2 hour luncheon cruise on the Mount Washington www.cruisenh.com from 12:30-3:00. Or, take a two hour railroad train ride www.hoborr.com/winnijune.html along the shore of Lake Winnipesaukee in Laconia and Meredith.
Riding the Mount is a good way to spend three hours in the middle of the day with a good lunch and the lake views all around, all aboard! Is a lot better than hanging around Weirs Beach. The City of Laconia should open a stand-up paddle board rental at the Weirs, for people to do ........ go paddle-boarding out beyond the beach swim line ..... and over toward the town docks ...... ??? A rack for rental paddle boards and rental kayaks located on the left side of the sandy beach, to the left of the rest rooms and get some paddle sports happening at the Weirs. A volleyball net and court, set up on the sand there, could be a good addition, too.

It makes no sense that they are still having Bike Week. Everything else seemingly has canceled accept this. Well there is an Aaron Lewis concert (social distancing style) taking place July 25th, at the Drive-In in Swanzey, NH.

The current restaurants and vendors are still around and will stock accordingly. What will be missing are all the beer tents and sidewalk carnival vendors. Curious if anyone discussed costs. No vendors no vendors paying fee to the city.

NH has done an excellent job of threading the Covid-19 needle so far. Now is not the time to encourage mass gatherings of people from outside the area. I think this plan strikes a reasonable balance. We don't need to turn this into Florida after being careful for 4 months.

Good way to put it! I'm sure local businesses and chamber were not to keen on this BS. If they are worried about the 'family atmosphere' at the Weirs, they should ask Al Mitchell if they could rent his hill for all the vendors and a beer tent! After all, they turned him down when he wanted to put in storage buildings!

Laconia decision should not discourage other towns in the area from holding events. HD is planning something. Twin Barn across the way will be fun. What of the race track? Many other locations are available for vendors. Will be interesting

I have a “Modest Proposal”. Perhaps Bike Week could be delayed until 3 weeks after the Sturgis social experiment.

Yes Dan, thank you. 77 FLH I bought from the original owner in Maine a few years back and have cleaned up. Original paint and most everything else! Love working on and riding old iron! Let me know if you ever want to take one for a ride.
I just got my “too old to ride 2 wheels” bike running and on road but it may be too busy to take that, barely does 45. 73 Servicar, 45” Flathead. Fun ride, trying to convince my wife to start riding it! The 1200 badge is incorrect. |

It will be a lot different this year. It looks like we will see heavier motorcycle traffic than a regular summer week but much less traffic than a June Bike Week.
With not much going on in the Weirs the Broken Spoke may be the hot spot for the week, although the Dive should see a lot of activity too. https://www.laconiadailysun.com/news...ntent=headline |

Sturgis organizers expected the overall crowd to be smaller, perhaps half the size of a normal year, when about a half-million people from across the country visit a town whose population is around 7,000.

Laconia Mayor Andrew Hosmer said New Hampshire has been proactive in taking pandemic precautions compared to South Dakota. He hopes those who come here will wear a mask.
Normal event vendors will be missing this year from The Weirs and the Harley-Davidson dealer in Meredith, two places where visitors tend to congregate. Also, center-line parking will not be allowed at The Weirs to limit crowding. https://www.laconiadailysun.com/news...f390d437f.html |

The surrounding states of Maine, Massachusetts, and Vermont all have motorcycle helmet laws and mandatory mask wearing rules, now, during the pandemic, unlike New Hampshire that has neither a helmet or a pandemic mask rule.
New Hampshire requires motorcyclists to wear eye protection unless your bike has a windshield. If I were a Laconia police officer assigned to bike week, I would definitely take the week off from police work and go hide out, up to Eustis, Maine, for the week! ![]() ![]() Le Province Quebec has a helmet law and since July 20, a pandemic face mask rule. The Canada-U.S. border is closed so's there won't be any Canadien/Canadian bikers coming to bike week, here ...... parlez vous quebeqois en Laconia?

Interesting post--I also would not want to be working Bike Week (I would have cancelled it), and I agree that everyone should be wearing masks. The no helmet thing does not bother me though. On this I agree with our Live Free or Die pen pals. I guess because helmet-less bikers are risking only their own health and not others. |

August 11, about 3:15-pm; Gov Sununu just announced a new rule for wearing masks in New Hampshire.
"DON'T GO VIRAL MASKS REQUIRED FOR GATHERINGS WITH 100+ PEOPLE" Which the Governor says will be enforced, as in enforced by the police, and certainly seems like it was done with Bike Week in mind, although Bike Week was not specifically mentioned by him ....... just my thought, here. So, wearing a mask will most likely be required and the rule enforced at the areas of Bike Week where the crowds tend to collect by the police. Wait and see how this gets reported by the news media, and how the local police interpret this new state pandemic control rule? This seems like a very smart new rule, so everyone at Laconia Bike Week will know in advance to be wearing a face mask. Walmart has well made, sturdy, comfy Hanes, 3-ply cotton face masks in black or white ....... 5-masks for $7.00 or $7.50 ..... made in Vietnam.

Motorcycles are not my thing, but for the 17 summers I have been at the Lake, Bike Week has been fine.
I cannot in any logical universe see how Bike Week can be justified this year. Of course, riding around, taking road trips etc. is fine. BUT no official can really believe that putting up signs/ giving out masks, etc. will in any way influence the behavior in restaurants, bars, in crowds. The LDS seems to be reporting that the “officials” all seem to be saying that it is not in their ability to stop it, only the organizers can. The Governor apparently thinks it will be all right. I can accept the premise that we “vulnerables” need to take care of ourselves But, it is incomprehensible that any responsible official really believes that Bike Week this year is good for the community. I was unaware of the new directive from the Governor when writing my comments. But, I still do not see the risk/benefit ratio benefitting the community.

Your missing the point. You have “friends” coming up. You think you confidently know where the friends have been and what they have practiced before they arrive? This is not the year to be entertaining.

Not 100% sure but I think ishoot308 said something like this in a previous post;
This horse has been beaten to death. Please give it a rest! The utter nonsense I have seen on both sides of this matter really makes me wonder how humans survive on a daily basis except that our breathing is automatic. Clearly politics are a critical part of most posters perspective and utterly disgustingly so as the political digs are strategically planted in so many posts. What little science that is being quoted or referenced is usually twisted beyond recognition. I see the most bizarre concepts at work is if they were a reality (like beating or killing the virus as opposed to slowing the spread). And what is mostly lacking is balance, common courtesy, the notion of taking personal responsibility for yourself, and respecting others decisions about their choices. This endless and nonsensical banter is almost worse than the discussions about our politicians. At this point I wouldn't dream of actually commenting on anything substantively related to this matter, or god-forbid my own opinion or preference. It would be an invitation to a public beating, regardless of what side of the matter I was on. I'm beginning to think these exchanges are the new form of backyard fights from my childhood. We really haven't grown up, we just switched fists and wrestling in the dirt for typing insults and nonsense. It must be a human craving to argue, one that if you have it, you rarely grow out of, like a sweet tooth or other compulsive behaviors. Sure hope we find a better subject to debate, like Nitromethane vs Cam 2 or anything with a better outcome than this,,, ![]() |

Just like the 2020 Boston Marathon, the 26-mile running event held in April was cancelled, now the Paris, France Marathon has also been cancelled. Regularly held in April, the 40-km Paris Marathon attracts 50,000 runners and was rescheduled for November, but now has been cancelled.
www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paris_Marathon So, what do the Boston and Paris Marathon events know about this pandemic that apparently the Laconia Bike Week does not want to acknowledge ...... sometimes, infrequently, it is best to cancel out, and wait till next year ..... things like world wars and pandemics sometimes, unfortunately, get in the way. Is better to cancel out and wait till next year, 2021. Charlie St. Clair can stay home and polish the gas tank on his motorcycle, or something, and look forward to 2021.

Apples to oranges comparisons are not useful in my opinion and you make the assumption that the actions to cancel other events are in fact the right choice. Sorry, this is all debatable and political and mostly driven by people who are not personally impacted by the choices. Politicians will not see their pay cut, will not be personally impacted by loss of revenue, will not lose their businesses or homes or lives based on their decisions. So again I will reiterate the words of someone wiser then me: This horse has been beaten to death. So please lets all give it a rest, and "try" to discuss things that actually produce useful discussion and helpful information exchange. This is going nowhere except to use up server space,,, ATB |

The State Liquor Commission and the city of Laconia enacted strict guidelines for establishments serving liquor with heavy enforcement planned during Bike Week. They had meetings with local business owners and warned them of the consequences if there were any violations.
There is the threat of loss of the liquor license and a cost of many thousand dollars to get it back if there is a violation. Because there will be no beer tents and no vendors the only place left that may have been a gathering spot is The Broken Spoke. With the overwhelming scrutiny of authorities in mind the Broken Spoke will close for Bike Week rather than risk being cited for a violation. So, I guess any bikers that do show up will pass through without hitting the brakes. Too bad, the revenue for businesses and the meals taxes would have helped the cause. Live Free or Die? |

In the past, Laconia used revenue from vendor licenses to offset police overtime and other expenses. Now they've given up the revenue and promise strict enforcement of harder to enforce rules. Now, the people who made August reservations will find lots of closed restaurants, and people hanging around with "nothing to do". A perfect set-up for the city council to eliminate Bike Week 2021, which is what they have really wanted for many, many years.

In a traditional year, the June Bike Week patrons fill motels and restaurants when many businesses need the revenue badly. As Bike Week attendance has declined over the past 15 years the impact on full time residents has declined substantially. The positives such as increased rooms and meal taxes and all of the money that comes in to the area and the whole state during Bike Week help the economic picture. |

Let's see....no beer tents,no bands,no concessions,no events such as hill climb etc.
Add enhanced enforcement which allows inspectors to close down a business, impose a $1,000 fine or even enter your home unannounced for such violations as standing at a bar or not wearing face masks. Should be interesting |

They effectively cancelled bike week without saying it. Spoke and Bob House closed for the week. Roads will be clear for riding.

It’s a little like politics used to be...if no one is happy with the legislation, then it probably hit the “sweet spot.”

My crew and I are happy to ride all day and relax on the Island with the BBQ going. Maybe a dinner by boat incognito with shorts and sandals, we'll call it undercover bike week. For us it's more about getting some riding in and enjoying some time away from the grind.

I can understand why many establishments are unwilling to remain open for bike week. For those that are open I am hopeful the rides are thankful, visit, and leave enormous tips! Riders, this is your opportunity to shine. You got this. Have a great weekend

This will be more like motorcycle weekend of old where guys just ride and hang out. It's turned into just a commercial enterprise.

BTW, we were at the Weirs and around Paugas Bay all day yesterday and if yesterday is any indication of whats to come, it will look more like old home week than bike week, and thats ok. Mostly saw lots of over 50 dudes just chillin. There was a group we passed at the cabins with the wading area just past the Weirs bridge and they were just too funny and really enjoying themselves. Went by them 4 times in 2 different boats and by the last time they were calling me green shirt as I had on one of those lime green hi-vis tee shirts.
Also Tiki boats were running nonstop, looked almost like all young woman, those boats make me laugh every time, GREAT idea! |

Spent one bike weekend at the old Shalimar in Tilton. Little sleep as they used the incline in front to do burnouts all night long.

Less people than a regular weekend and end of summer week.
Since Friday, Weirs has been very quiet, and Meredith, Weirs and Wolfeboro docks were wide open with zero waiting. The little biker action i saw looked like all over 50 crowd. The solution to beating the pandemic appears to have killed the patient as well (dead economy) Its shocking to see it so quiet. I'll bet there not even selling much gas. |

Despite turnover in elected officials, I think this is what the Laconia City Council has wanted since 1963. They just could never quite figure a way to actually shut it down. A non-existent 2020 Bike Week will make it difficult for vendors etc to start up again in 2021.

Yesterday morning, I had to go to Manchester.
I went down 28 to Chichester, then 393-93-293 to Manchester. Returned 93-393-106 to Gilford Lowe's, then 11 to Alton Bay. No groups of note, perhaps 4 or 5 groups of 6-8 M/Cs. Just not out there at all. Even going by restaurants, few cycles seen in parking lots. Very few in the Alton Bay parking lot just before 1pm. Dave

Plymouth, NH recently passed an enforced mask town ordinance that requires people to wear a face mask in public, and Plymouth has at least two large sign boards located at road entry areas to town that say "Wear A Mask, Its The Law".
Plymouth NH is home to Plymouth State University that has something like 4000 students. These large orange electric signboards look like they probably came from the NH Dept Transportation for use on Route 93, and are now in use in Plymouth Main St areas. As of August 10, according to a NHPR article, the NH towns of Durham, Enfield, Hanover, Keene, Lebanon, Newmarket, and now Plymouth have decided to go with enforced mask mandates. August 25, 2020: Associated Press; "Revved by Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, Covid 19 Infections Move Fast and Far." WCVB-Boston has the story: http://www.wcvb.com/article/revved-b...d-far/33799811 Have noticed that people inside the stores in Gilford, Meredith, Plymouth all seem to be wearing masks, and taking it serious. Noticed my favorite store in Laconia, the Saint Vincent de Paul thrift store has reopened for business. This is the place to go for one dollar, donated tee shirts from last years Bike Week ....... such a deal!

Bike activity today along 11B (Gilford) noticeably much more brisk than days past.
However -- the Weather for the weekend looks like it will cut the traffic.

Well we got bike week 2020 in the books, just shy of our 1000 mile goal. The week was quiet for sure but we did see bikes out and about. the usual spots were busy like lincoln the kanc and the gas stops. Bike traffic was busy Friday, I think today would have been jammed if it was sunny. Funny that my starter crapped out when loading the trailer, go figure. Found a lot of new roads, lots of laughs and too many desserts - success
