Fishing from Long Island Bridge...

We took a joy ride on Saturday out to Long Island. Haven't been out there in many, many years. We were somewhat amazed to see maybe 8-10 people, (4 or 5 on each side), fishing from the LI Bridge. Is the fishing that good there? Is that a year-round occurrence, or is it just an ice-out/first couple days of salmon/trout season thing?

Fishing for trout and salmon is always good after ice out as the fish are shallow and nearer the surface. A good bet with live smelt dangled temptingly from a bridge or shore! They will take cast lures as well! Later in the season they dive deeper to the thermocline but that doesn’t happen until the water has warmed significantly.

That is pretty much a year around occurrence. It definitely has its peak, in the early spring, and late fall...... As someone that goes through there all the time, it can be a bit frustrating when there are newbies fishing from the bridge, that don't understand where boats are likely to be passing through..... I have more then once had to yell at people who fish in the travel lane for boats.....

Yeah they are there pretty much Ice-out all the way to Ice-in. I would say just like the entire Lake, we like to relinquish the lake to fishermen in May and October. And they are at the high numbers then....

The salmon/trout season closes on Sept 31st. Perhaps the bass fishermen continue into October?

Bass fishing is awesome from the bridge

The old wooden bridge was a social happening especially after dinner in the 60's and 70's. There was a wide variety of hooks and lures hanging from the telephone wires. The sidewalk had an inner rail to keep people safe from traffic. All ages were on the bridge in the summer catching bass, perch and sunfish. I would ride my bike down from Far Echoes and head back before dark. Doesn't happen much now and I've thought that without the rail it is not as user friendly, plus no one wanders out to fish like they used to. Used to see a lot of small aluminum boats putting around the bridge fishing too. It's funny none of the serious fisherman wanted to catch bass mostly as kids we sat alone by the rocks and the buoys trying to get the "big one" with worms and a bobber . The real fishermen were working the middle of the lake from early morning downrigging for salmon and lake trout. The thought of a "bass boat" would have been far out....like "wake boats" and "personal watercraft". I had a 1969 Sea-Doo with rotax motor and Berkeley drive. They were abandoned because of poor sales.......I guess ahead of their time though not by much.
