Sophie C Information...

Hey guys,

I'm writing (another) article for school and since all three books I have with information on the Sophie C are currently island bound on Bear, I need some help with my research.

I was able to gather a little from this site as well as from a few links from here, but not enough to write a 2000 word article.

Any links/info/help would be greatly appreciated. I work 40+ hours a week, have 3 small kids, and a wife, so travelling to NH libraries would prove difficult.

In 1945 the new owners of the Mt.Washington, Carl and Byron Hedblom, commissioned the General Ship and Engine Works of East Boston, Massachusetts, of which they were principal owners, to build the MV Sophie C, named after the owner’s mother. She was launched in Center Harbor, New Hampshire, in August 1945 with the sole purpose of a shuttle service between The Weirs and Wolfeboro before the return of the MV Mount Washington to service.
The vessel is 76 feet long with a 16-foot beam and has a capacity of 150 passengers. Constructed entirely of steel, making her fully fireproof. Outfitted with diesel engines and is capable of traveling 15 miles per hour. It is presently owned and operated by Winnipesaukee Flagship Corporation of Weirs Beach and Center Harbor, New Hampshire.
In 1969 the Sophie C took over the mail service on Lake Winnipesaukee from Uncle Sam II.

I forgot to tell you that our very own WeirsBeachBoater is one of the captains of the Sophie C and Doris E!
He might be able to offer a first hand perspective.
(WBB - sorry I didn't make it for a trip with you and your new ladies.

Rattlesnake Girl. I had most of that information stuck in the back of my brain from reading about the Sophie for so long but I would've never been able to remember it without your help. And then my article would've been incorrect with the facts. Your links as well as your opening paragraph provided me with info I never knew!

You haven't seen any of my articles because none of them have been published (yet!). I've received over a half dozen rejection letters from Offshore, Lakestyle, Waterfront Living, and a few others too.

But I'm not giving up. Less than a year ago, I didn't even have the courage to submit any of my work, so a rejection letter is a step in the right direction (I hope).

I've been trying to contact Lake Life for almost four months now, but they haven't gotten back to me. Its a pretty good magazine-brand new (only 2 issues so far). Check out their webite. Its just for subscriptions, but in the narrative it talks about Winni and Squam lakes. www.LakeLife.com

As soon as I find out something of mine is being published, I'll let you know.
