Default Gluten Free Restaurants/The Bob House

We've mostly been a Buckey's/Yankee Smokehouse/George's/Pop's family this summer but a few weeks ago, visitors had gluten free needs and The Bob House looked to be the most friendly for that.

The experience was GREAT. The waitress took time to explain the kitchen, choices, and other potential issues, and the gluten free meals, as well as all the others, were excellent.

Any other restaurants in the Lakes Region notable for their approach to gluten free? We've not considered it much, so it would be good to get some other options should these friends visit again.

I usually end up gluten-free because I am low fat. You do not need a special place, pretty much anyplace that serves grilled fish should be fine. If it's a sandwich place at lunch, go with grilled chicken or something else on top of a salad.

If your friend has a severe allergy (gluten, nuts, whatever), it is also important to "read" the waiter's response when you tell them about the allergy. If they seem confused, they (and perhaps the rest of the staff) are not trained, and you should bail.

My friend said her gluten requirements definitely require a restaurant that knows what it's doing—cross contamination through surfaces, cooking pans, and even through the air can affect her. In fact, she had to change out her Teflon cooking gear because gluten can get caught in the cracks of the treated surfaces. She can only use stainless steel for this reason.

We visited The Bob House again last night and, again, the waitress, cooks, etc. were on top of things—even bringing her pizza out on a separately marked plate.

I didn't know this level of need existed, but it appears some restaurants are getting ahead of it—the Red Heat Tavern, in fact, takes allergy orders on purple forms, has different prep locations and materials, and serves all gluten free meals on red plates to identify them.
