When I was young, my parents would rent a cottage just behind the Weirs Beach Hotel for July 4th week. In addition to spending time in the closet each morning trying to see if our Frankenberry cereal box would glow-in-the-dark, indicating a won prize, we would play pool in the hotel game room, roller skate at the upstairs rink across the street, buy bows and arrows at the "trading post," and, when it was time, watch the fireworks from the hotel porch. (Though we could not afford to actually stay at the hotel, we certainly took advantage of its amenities!).
Last night, I took the fam to watch the fireworks and it was straight out of a Cat Stevens' song—I'd become my father. It was a really cool moment watching the kids shoot at the piano player in the Half Moon Arcade, get their fortunes from Madame Teller, and choose which crappy prize to get with their tickets. The night ended with an excellent fireworks display taken in by a huge group of people both on land and on water and, other than that idiot blasting Katy Perry's "Firework" and doofus with his pontoon "headlights" on, it was pretty perfect. I know some people pooh pooh the Weirs and its static presence, but my gosh do I appreciate the nostalgia. Hope y'all have a great 4th—the weather's been perfect!
