The Marine Patrol uses 159.15 MHz, but they have converted to digital mode so if you want to hear them you will need a scanner that can receive digital transmissions. There was a thread here several months ago in which Skip provided additional information about this.

Do they still use 854.4875 ?? VHF does sound like a much better choice for the area that they cover. They must also have access to a repeater from the other lakes, or do they use cell phones now?

I can receive the MP headquarters' transmissions on both 854.4875 MHz (FM) and 159.15 MHz (digital) but I believe most, if not all, the MP boats now use digital mode on 159.15 MHz. I cannot copy the patrol boat transmissions on 854.4875 MHz anymore, and their transmissions on 159.15 MHz can only be received with a scanner capable of decoding digital transmissions.

If Skip is reading this thread, perhaps he can comment with more specific information.

The MP's are/have been converting over to the digital ASTRO system, as are most other law enforcement agencies in the State.

They are licensed statewide to transmit simplex in P25 digital on 159.150, there also being a base station for 159.150 (with the contol point being MP HQ in Gilford) on Belknap Mtn that covers the Winnipesaukee & Winnisquam Lakes area.

There multi-mode Motorola radios also allow them to talk directly to any SP Troop, County dispatch or most other VHF comm centers in the State, so they can pop up on most other VHF channels in either analog or digital mode anywhere in the State.

The older 854.4875 infrastructure still exists. Once again the CP is HQ in Gilford with a base on also on Belknap Mtn. Last I knew they still simulcasted on both freqs, but I haven't monitored the 800 Mhz side in several years.

If you want to monitor the activity on or around the Lake, you will need to invest in a P25 capable scanner (the Radio Shack PRO-96 handheld or the Uniden 296D handheld or 796D mobile) and a decent outdoor antenna.

You will have to set the unit up to cover local & state police frequencies, area fire/ambulance services and various marine channels.

And yes, many conversations take place privately on cellular..as is much the case with many emergency services agencies.
