Default Did you use your Debit Card at Hannaford's in Gilford or Alton in February?

I was contacted by my Credit Union this week and informed that they were issuing me a new debit card. When I called to inquire I was told that it was because I had used the card at Hannaford and since they had a data breach it was now "compromised".

Has anyone else been contacted by their financial institution or noticed any irregularities on the most recent statement? BEWARE!

A Message From Hannaford CEO Ron Hodge
Dear Customer:
Hannaford has contained a data intrusion into its computer network that resulted in the theft of customer credit and debit card numbers. No personal information, such as names or addresses, was accessed. Hannaford doesn’t collect, know or keep any personally identifiable customer information from transactions.
We sincerely regret this intrusion into our systems, which we believe, are among the strongest in the industry. The stolen data was limited to credit and debit card numbers and expiration dates, and was illegally accessed from our computer systems during transmission of card authorization.
The intrusion affected Hannaford stores, Sweetbay stores in Florida and certain independently-owned retail locations in the Northeast that carry Hannaford products.
For more than 125 years, Hannaford has been dedicated to earning customer trust, and we want to provide you with these recommended steps:
- Carefully review your financial institution and credit card statements, and immediately contact your credit card company or issuing bank with any questions or concerns about individual charges.
- For more information or with questions, please call our Customer Information Center at 866-591-4580.
Hannaford is cooperating with credit and debit card issuers to ensure those customers who may be affected by the theft are protected. We also alerted law enforcement authorities, and are working closely with them to help identify those responsible.
We realize this incident may raise concerns and questions for our customers, and we sincerely regret any inconvenience this attack on our system may cause you. As always, we appreciate you choosing to shop at Hannaford. We remain committed to providing you with the finest foods and a clean, friendly and secure shopping experience.
Sincerely,

Ronald C. Hodge
President and CEO

Default My bank did the same

I got a letter from my bank last Saturday telling me some of their debit cards had been compromised, but they didn't specify why. It wasn't until a few days later that I heard about Hannaford on the news. The Mass AG suggested today that anyone who used a debit or credit card between Dec. 7, 2007 and March 10, 2008 notify the fraud department of their card issuer or bank, and to review their statements.

I got home to find my new debit card in the mail...too late to get to the bank to activate it with a new PIN number. Guess I'll actually have to get up and try to look semi-human before noon tomorrow to activate the thing.

Only I have not been in a Hannaford at least since last summer. My bank called today and said they were issuing me a new card and to destroy the old one.

I received a letter from Laconia Savings Bank. My card has been identified by them that my information may have been compromised. They gave me the option to repace the card for free... I have done that. It is voluntary at this time to replace the card.

Exactly the same here. My wife uses it at Hannafords all the time.

I live in Florida and we have Sweetbays down here which is a Hannaford chain. I have used my debit card there a million times since February. According to the news releases here they were able to "sniff" out just about every credit/debit card number that was sent over their network and catch about 4.2 million numbers.

A day after the release was made my card started getting hit. They didnt get me for much and my bank will be giving me the money back. But they signed me up for a variety of things. Its very unusual because they did some research and put my information together with the card to buy stuff and have it sent to me. Unfortunately, Ive been hacked in the past and it usually gets used out of the country.

Citizens Bank is taking the same measures. I appreciate it - but not looking forward to changing all my electronic accounts when this happens.... Oh, well...

My sister-in-law got a call from her credit card company this weekend saying that there had been some suspicious activity on her card and asking her if she had been spending large sums in New Jersey this weekend. When she said no they cancelled the card. She's a regular Hannaford's customer!

Angry Cards Compromised

I too received a letter from my bank and I requested a replacement card. What's ironic is that my wife and I had replaced our debit cards only 3 weeks prior due to an unauthorized online purchase we discovered while reviewing our bank statement online.

Once we got our new cards and activated them the first place I used mine was Hannafords! That's the one my bank said had been compromised! I do wonder if our earlier cards had already been 'stolen' from Hannafords and since they had already been canceled we received no notification.

Default Re: Hannaford & Fraudulent Charges

My neighbor was informed via a phone call almost 3 weeks ago (I was there when they called her) from Citi Bank that they were questioning charges/ purchases she made. They told her the last charge she made with a signature and questioned any further purchases. They cancelled her card immediately and said they would issue a new card within 14 days. She told them she needed her ONLY CC and they(Citibank) sent her a new card within 2 days. They sent her a statement 10 days later(I was there again when it came UPS) and all charges were at 3 different Walmarts in Kissemee(sp)Florida totaling almost $3000.00. I guess my point is that the banks/Hannaford were aware of the situation well before it broke on the news stations and was reported in the newspapers. I would guess that many people would never had questioned any charges and just paid their bill had not somebody ?? brought this to the attention of the authorities. I guess somebody is paying attention somewhere. BTW it was at Hannaford in Gilford.

Slime balls that have the know-how to do this need to get real jobs. Seems as though their computer skills can be better utilized. Hell, maybe by cracking the code in a slot machine!

Actually the majority of them aren't all that skilled. They just follow some known exploits, very little of their own "invention" comes into the mix.

This all begs a question...who pays?
Your credit/debit card is stolen or hacked. The thieves use your card to make purchases. You tell your bank that they are not valid purchases, so your bank does not make you pay. OK so who takes the hit?
1. Your bank?
2. Visa/MC/Amex?
3. The store where the purchase was made?
4. Hannaford?

If the thieves are caught, they would probably be ordered to pay restitution....ya right, like that would ever get paid.
