The Sound of the Mount

When the Mount went by Rattlesnake the other night, I was saddened to notice that it was silent. I will miss the sound of her engines. I could always hear her coming before I could see her.

I had the opportunity to watch and listen to the mount the other night as she went by my camp on a very calm and quiet evening. While she no longer has that well known low end percolation sound, there is still a sound to her. The only way I can describe it is it sounds like a windmill arm cutting through the wind. A very low audible whoosh...

We had always said that we felt the Mount (almost a vibration..) before we saw her. Guests were surprised that we could " predict" her passing by , which was partially due to years of her schedule, but more to that vibe.

Turn up your volume to get an idea how load it really is. Ear plugs are required.

For 50 years I have also heard the Mount's approach after she left The Weirs and long before she emerged around the tip of Stonedam Island. The sound is now relegated to a nostalgic memory like so many other things around the lake that now exist only in my mind; Interlakes Dairy, Basket World, the Miss Winnipesaukee speed boat, Thomas P. Rice and his sea-plane and Laker boat, Teen Haven, Winnipesaukee Gardens. The list grows every year.

Amazing!... I know that she's swing'in some pretty big props. In the first video the engines sound like they are just barely working at about 11 or 1200 RPMs. The gear reduction for those big props must be incredible!

What was the cruise speed in knots, for the shakedown cruise?

I'm looking to be up to the Lake this summer and will take a cruise on The M/S Mount Washington fur'shore!

By the way, a big ThankYou for providing this wonderful website so as to help many of us keep from getting too homesick! A wonderful Treat!

I think it was 17 mph. I think they said they went 18 the day before without passengers on board.

17 mph is about right. 17.3 mph to be exact.

I was told the Mount was capable of 20 knots with the old motors.

However, the new Cat's are capable to an 1800 RPMs, so as to boot Her along at more of a clip, so to speak. Deepens on the gearing to the final drive unites. I think that the Enterprise engines were limited to a lower 1400 RPMs.
Hey, in No Way is She a dragster, just curious about Her get along these days.

Of all the things at the Lake that have gone by the wayside, I think, perhaps, the noise of the Mount will be the one I miss the most. I can't tell you how much that sound meant NH to me.

If they had consulted me, I would have told them to leave that noise just the way it was.

Anybody record it? Maybe they can play the old sound over the loud speakers as an enticement to "all aboard" ?

"Anybody record it."..? Of course they have...Thousands of people who have heard the Mount go by over the years...It's....in Their Minds...They Remember. They don't have to be "Engine" people to remember the sound of the Mount passing by.

The NEW sound has been discussed here...... BUT ....NOT How the New Sound Sounds from OUTSIDE....away from the ship as it passes. I think that's what people are wondering.

You always knew when you were in the Mounts wake from the smell of the exhaust. I suspect that is now a memory as well.

And gaining fuel efficiency, that we have lost some noise pollution that most of us were willing to continue listening to.

The M/S Mount Washington Cruise Management is looking to enhance their future and in total EPA compliance fourth with.

PS. Now, putting mufflers on our Loon's, is a 'nother ball game!

I agree, we left Barndoor last weekend and were surprised to see her in town picking up the Kingswood kids for their prom. Said to my wife, "never heard her come in." Guess I never will again.

Yes!... The new Cats are more than capable of a loud bark, without proper muffling even after the catalytic exhaust.

I'm 'shore that the M/S Mount Washington Cruise Lines could come up with a sound recording of the old Enterprise engines under way for those of us that may be in withdrawal.

Hey!... I'd buy one!

A Quote from a Mount Washington Cruise News Letter;

" The Mount is cruising with new environmentally friendly engines this season. They are smooth and quiet. Come and check it out for yourself...."

1) Unlike the boats powered by truck engines, both the Mount and its very-identifiable sound would disappear as it passed behind Rattlesnake Island. (If you were boating in The Broads).

2) There was no mistaking that characteristic sound. Wouldn't the engine of the steam-powered Mount (Old Mount) have been silent? Well, maybe not.

but the best sound was ( even as kids) the first one in the group to proclaim:

" There Goes the Mount ! "

I would be willing to bet that the last time the Mount got new engines, there was a subset of people who strongly disliked the noise that the Mount made and how loud it was.
