Default Ice Report 1-17-10

Walked out this PM from Cattle Landing on Meredith Neck. Good solid 8-9 inches everwhere from the parking area at the town docks, through the gap between Bear and Meredith Neck and on around the North side of Mark and on to Mink Island. I cut holes every couple hundred yards most of the way.

The ice boat really did chew up the ice through Cattle Landing and the boat was sitting at the docks today. I little snow cover will fix that. As usual, there is one long ice reef that runs from Dolly Island south towards the tip of Meredith Neck. Pushes up 18 inches or so in places and water is visible in a number of spots. I walked around it to the North where it was much flatter. A couple ATVs went by my place around 4:00. Otherwise, nice and quiet.

thanks for the report, we have plans to go up on Saturday.
Looks like with the new snow, conditions will be good for a snowmobile.

Default Ice Report

We were on our snowmobile passing between/near Jolly and Birch Islands and suddenly there was no snow cover and it seemed that the ice was thin and slushy (scary!). Has anyone else encountered these conditions there or anywhere else for that matter? We are going to stay away from any area where there are no snowmobile tracks.

As a side note; yesterday afternoon, there was a group of 16 teenagers, all guys, aprox age 15-16, dressed to attend church, who walked across the snowy ice from Horse Island to Varney Point, aprox 3-4 miles.

At one point out by Timber Island, a white & blue laker amphibian buzzes up from behind the group flying altitude of 15'.

Just out for an afternoon walk home to Gilford or something? Anyone else see them?
