Once in a lifetime eagle posts

Hubby and I were out yesterday finally enjoying a day on our boat. Between work and the weather we had only been out once before for about an hour. So we went to Meredith and this is what we saw on the way. Not sure how to post pics. Tried before but didn't work. This eagle just started flying right over our boat eyeing a fish and the Mount was right in the background. Made our day!!!

My question is...how the heck does an eagle just grab a fish like that?
As far as I know, fish don't usually swim at the surface.
It's pretty incredible when you think about it.

And yes, these shots are also incredible!!!

Actually I think the fish was dead. In the first picture you can see a litle white spot in front of the eagle. I believe that is the fish.

Many times I have seen eagles at Quabbin Reservoir scoop up live salmon and trout that were feeding on the surface.

They may not swim at the surface all the time, but if you spend any time near the water, you will see them jumping and grabbing insects from the surface quite often.

A great opportunity—and some superb photos!

Bald Eagles like "easy" prey, so a floating fish is too much to ignore.

On Lake Winnipesaukee, one competitor is the Black-Backed Gull—an immense species of Sea Gull. Besides its large size, identification of the Black-Backed Gull is easy—but instead of a black color, its back can be colored gray.

One with his eye on that dead fish, may be in the distance in your last photo:

They're often seen on the water, struggling to make big dead-fish pieces into small dead-fish pieces. They are otherwise seen "lazing" on markers or partially submerged boulders—far away from shorelines.

When you're huge "Flying Rat", you can make yourself very obnoxious to even Eagles.

...and speaking of Black-Backed Gulls, one was making big dead-fish pieces into small dead-fish pieces—directly in front of my place—this past Sunday.

The following day, at 8-AM, an Eagle was flying with great determination over my boat in the Broads.

While I was trying to decide if it was of the Golden or Bald variety, I heard the repeated cry of an Osprey.

Craning my neck, I saw an Osprey carrying a fish towards Mirror Lake, but over the treetops at Ayer's Point. He'd picked up some speed, but limited by his fish burden, the Eagle was quickly able to threaten him with his talons, and the Osprey released the fish.

The Eagle swooped down and picked up the fish from the water then disappeared over the treeline.

With apparent resignation, the Osprey slowly headed back the way he had come, which was Rattlesnake Island. The Eagle had seen the Osprey and had flown an intercept course—from the direction of Welch Island, two miles away.

I watched all of this while trying—unsuccessfully—to open the freezer bag which "protected" my camera!

But this "file photo" is of a typical Eagle-Osprey encounter:

About 10-AM, the Bald Eagle came out of the direction of Welch Island, and was fairly close to my sailboat. So I got out my camera—which this time was on a lanyard

and prepared to take a photo.

He turned directly overhead, making my photo especially difficult, but I saw what he was after—still another free meal from an Osprey!

Above Camp Boycroft, the Osprey sharply turned, taking advantage of a "tail" wind, and had accelerated feverishly in the direction of Parker Island. The two disappeared behind the treeline over Wolfeboro's old airport runway, but I can guess the outcome: No fish dinner for the Osprey.

About ½-hour later, the Eagle returned overhead, but flying contentedly in the direction of Red Hill—in the distance—to the northwest.

I couldn't get both birds in the photo, but you can see an energized Bald Eagle over Tuftonboro Neck's Marriott Compound:
