The Off Color (dark) patches on the chicks are the "Pinfeathers" coming in.

Very cool! I just saw an eagle this morning near my house. I forget just how big they really are when they come close to you!

I'm getting annoyed that these FAT chicks haven't figured out what those big feet are for. They can't even stand up properly.

It looks like one of the chicks has got his right leg caught in the crotch of the tree and maybe some big sticks at the edge of the nest. Unable to extricate himself. Mother is attentive but unable to help. Cameras OFF. NB

Eaglet In DC Nest Rescued Before Rain Storm During the early evening on April 20, DC 4’s leg became lodged in a Y-shaped stick (inside a hole) located on the outer perimeter of the nest near the tree trunk. The eaglet was unable to free itself after many attempts to do so over a considerable period of time, so the American Eagle Foundation, in cooperation with the US Fish and Wildlife Service, arranged for the eaglet to be rescued. Initial examination of the eaglet on the ground by a USFWS eagle expert found that the leg did not appear to be seriously injured. The eaglet was removed from the nest before rain and thunder showers were predicted to take place. The eaglet will be taken to a veterinarian for a physical checkup on April 21, where a radiograph of the leg will be taken to absolutely confirm that the leg is generally OK. Hopefully, the eaglet will be returned to the nest in a few days to resume life with its sibling and parents. – Al Cecere, American Eagle Foundation (DCEagleCam.Org and www.Eagles.Org).

Thanks guys for the links. Spent a good part of last night trying to figure how they would send someone up an 80 foot tree to do the rescue....
Tree Climber....Firehouse hook and ladder truck....Really tall bucket truck...etc. OR a young "Rock Climber" with strap on lineman leg spikes, affectionately called "toenails" by the guys that use them to climb telephone poles. Hopefully a happy ending. ![]() |

They have been named by anonymous sources as Honor and Glory...or something. I prefer to call themHeckle and Jeckle...

Heckle has flown away ("Fledged"). Heckle came back to the nest today to reunite with his sibling Jeckle. Parent came by with a Big fish..which is all gone.

Looks like he/she got its beak snapped off and flex sealed back on.
