Ok, I usually just go for bass but this weekend I either caught a trout or salmon...my first. a real nice one from my dock. It was silver with spots. A beautiful fish. Took a couple of pictures and then let it go. So, what was it??

Most likely a salmon.
Check out this link: http://www.maine.gov/ifw/fishing/fis...ckedsalmon.htm Lake trout are also spotted, but darker with purplish tints. Rainbow are silverish, but with green and pink colors as well. White perch are silver, but with no spots. Cheers.... Gusman |

Are these salmon located in Winni? I tried to post a picture that I took but had trouble posting it here. I will try again

Hi GTO,
Yes... Winnie is pretty loaded with landlocked salmon. I'm a bass fisherman too, and occasionally catch them when fishing for smallies. This year, I caught a Lake Trout on Winnisquam while fishing for smallies. Not sure where you were fishing (how deep, what type of lures etc) but this is a bit late in the season to catch them relatively shallow. Of course with this weather, who knows what the fish re doing! Usually, just after ice-out is when you catch salmon while fishing for smallies. Anyhow... it's always nice to get surprised! Cheers... Definately a salmon. I compared it to other salmon on fishwinni.com (although mine was smaller) and it was definately a salmon. I caught it off my dock in about 10 feet of water. What a beautiful fish. I was using, get this, rubber worms on a 2.0 hook. I was looking for bass and this was a bonus. Don't know what you use for smallies but try out these worms (I get them fron AJ's bait in Merideth) They come in all colors but i have been using Pumkin seed (dark green). Simple hookup. Just put the hook through the middle, no weights. Bass smack them (large and small) and now I guess salmon do too. I always used live bait in the past but all last year used these and have had great success.
Also caught a smallie yesterday although she was quite large with a full belly (of eggs I'm sure) All catch and release
