This is the official 2013 Ice-Out thread. If you reply to this thread all of the information about this year's ice-out will be easily accessible. Post your observations, concerns, pictures and whatever else comes to mind re: ice-out.
The Ice-Out page is up at http://www.rattlesnakecam.com/iceout.htm. There you will find all of the images to watch the ice melt as well as links to special ice out features such as Saunder's Bay daily picture with information about previous year's ice out. Ice-out has occured in recent years from 39-41 degrees as reported by the Winnipesaukee Dataphone at the Lakeport Dam. You can also observe the 2 ft and 10 ft temps rising at http://www.blackcatnh.com/ (just under the Black Cat Island Weather Cam picture)

Channel 7 yesterday said to expect below normal temps and above normal precipitation through the end of this month. It is only March!
Possible major snow or rain storm for Monday into Tuesday. 16 degrees out here in Belmont as I head out to my morning gym routine.

Well, we're planning on leaving Florida on April 4th and arriving at the lake on the 5th -- weather permitting! As long as there is no snow on our little private road, we'll be there! Do you think we're nuts?

I was thinking April 13th a few days ago but if the long range predictions stick it could drop back into the April 20s. I didn't get my guess into the contest this year because the link never showed on the Ice Out page...bummer.

Certainly a long stretch of well below normal temps, and it's going to last until Wednesday or Thursday! No March ice-out this year!

This winds were clearing the lake of snow today but there will be plenty of snow added on Tuesday. I was in Alton Bay and even the Merrymeeting River entering the Bay had a thin skim of ice around noon today. Ice Out is a ways off.

My wife and I walked over to Sleepers Isl yesterday (Saturday) with the dog from near the West Alton sandbar area. The ice was snow covered so the walking was easy and took no more than 10 mins or so. We didn't drill any holes but I used a heavy ice scraper to check it. It sure looked as though the ice was plenty thick the whole way across. Honestly, we probably could have drove over in the truck!!!! We felt that safe. Ice out will probably be a while sorry to say.
Anyway is was good to get out there and check things out and think about the season to come.

This is from the Farmer Almanac...I always just like to look at it.
March 2013 16th-19th. Unsettled, gusty winds, with mixed rain and wet snow. 20th-23rd. A major coastal storm with strong winds and heavy precipitation. 24th-27th. Showers from Virginia and Maryland to New England, then fair. 28th-31st. Another coastal storm! More wind, rain and snow, just in time for Easter. April 2013 1st-3rd. No fooling: very unsettled Mid-Atlantic States through New England, then fair. 4th-7th. More wetness. 8th-11th. Pleasant spell. 12th-15th. Rain unfortunately coincides with Patriot's Day in Massachusetts and Maine. 16th-19th. Sunny skies. 20th-23rd. Windy and showery; squalls along the coast; heavy rain for Mid-Atlantic States. Followed by improving weather. 24th-27th. Sunny and pleasantly mild. 28th-30th. Heavy rains, followed by fair skies. May 2013 1st-3rd. Fair and dry. 4th-7th. Scattered thunderstorms for Mid-Atlantic States; showers into New England; all followed by clearing. 8th-11th. Very unsettled; widespread thunderstorm activity for Maryland, Virginia. 12th-15th. Clearing and pleasant.

Daytime highs in the lower 30's, nighttime lows of 10-15 simply isn't good ice-out weather lately, is it? I'm beginning to wonder which will come first -- ice-out, or bike week?

With the temps as cold as they were last night I noticed areas around Black Cat that were open refroze and the ice looked pretty thick.
Looking at the next week the ice should be rebuilding with those temps down in the mid to low teens at night and only on the mid to low 30's during the day. ![]() As for the storm a lot of us are still looking for that money that last winter shorted us. I'm hoping for a couple of more storms myself. ![]()

How's this for an example of how different New England's weather can be from year to year...
The April Fool's Blizzard - March 31 - April 1, 1997 - dumped 27 inches at my house in Reading, MA. One year later, almost to the day - March 30, 1998 - it was 88 degrees! |

By then, I should be able to get under the bridge (hopefully) and do a chug chug cruise out to Sandy Point and back, or at least to the Bandstand and back.

Why under the bridge and out to the bandstand is one of the first areas to open up. You will be taking mini rides while my boat is still hanging up at Fay's!

Getting "under the bridge" can be an issue for some boats when the lake level is high. That is often the case in the spring.

One year ago today we made our first 2012 trip to Welch, raised the flag and lowered the seasonal dock. Calm day maybe about 60 degrees.
Today we had a very nice time skiing on fresh powder at Gunstock. Fantastic conditions. Now we would rather have been boating over to Welch but as they say, if life gives you lemons make lemonade. BTW, we were on the second chair at opening but we were the 1st skiers (except for ski patrol) down Gunsmoke crossing to middle Recoil. Someday I'll learn to ski in several inches of fresh powder without landing on my face at least once. ![]() |

Slickcraft Bend the knees. Powder is a great way to ski, but you have to watch the changing conditions. I learned the hard way too, with many mothfuls of snow.

Yes, a year ago we had temps in the 60's and were waiting for the official word...I had just pulled the boat out of the garage to get it ready for opening day.

What an amazing day at the lake today! The shot from the Weirs Cam tells it all! Way off in the distance near Eagle Island the ice looks dark and maybe water. Is there anyone out on Governors or at Dockham Shores with a view out that direction. Maybe some open water between Governors and Eagle?

I always thought that when Phil saw his shadow there wouild be 6 more weeks of winter and jf he didn't see his shadow then there would be a month and half more of winter. So far it works as good as the other way.

In case anyone needs this information, this is the list of Ice-out dates since records have been kept (since 1888). We have a ways to go before we hit the normal, expected ice-out date.

I am switching marinas this year (no trailer) and the old one is splashing on the 11th of May. Don't want to be dodging sheets of ice going from one to the other. Late April would be great for me.

Just a quick update that the ice is still pretty thick between the Rattlesnake Island landing and the island itself. I skied out late yesterday afternoon, testing with an ice ax several times and was never able to break through. My cousin was talking with an ice fisherman in Alton Bay on Saturday who said it was about 12" in the bay.

Starting today some stronger sun and higher temps through the weekend will provide some good melting. By April 1 there shouldn't be any snow left here, in Laconia, other than some dirty snow banks (no foolin'). Last year at this time the lake was wide open after a very mild March. This weeks temps are slightly warmer than last year and the lake temp is about 4 degrees cooler. We are looking at 3 more weeks till "ice-out".
Putting the bass boat in the water Sunday. Let the pre spawn fishing begin! |

Sat in the sun on the dock for a couple hours today. It was great seeing the lake bottom. I saw a few spiders and got buzzed by a flying insect. Two minuscule things that scream spring. Canadian geese were patrolling the shore looking for a yard to do their thing. I made sure they saw my two large Maine Coons who were inquisitively watching them.

I was just watching a man ICE FISHING, on my Paugus Bay camera. I guess that means I won't be out there in my fishing boat Good Stuff, on Monday, for opening day, trolling along, sun sparkling off the water, loving life, wondering how I got so lucky to be able to take part in the opening day expectations............LOL....

![]() ![]() From a mile up over Gunstock, we shot the entire lake. I don't think you'll see much open water. Ice out does not look to be soon. The full screen version is at http://tinyurl.com/Winnipesaukee. You can scroll from Meredith to Alton. |

Still a long ways from the bandstand but a tiny bit of a start. Recent snow has mostly melted, still grey slush on most of the lake. Hopefully we will see some darkening of the ice soon.
It will probably be shoulder to shoulder Monday on the bridge as well as the Mt. Washington dock. |

That's why I put in a thank you to Slickcraft for his picture from the bridge. Being 300 miles away, I miss the Alton Bay webcam and appreciate the photos taken by those who are there year-round. Will have to wait 4-5 weeks more to see that view in person again.

Just back from a drive from Alton to Gilford and back. It's going to be awhile. Still no dark areas showing. I didn't even see any cracks that would normally be showing water seepage.
But most of the shoreline is showing retreat, and areas that have bubblers are expanding. The nice and sunny weather the next few days will help. But we most likely have 2-3 weeks to go. |

There are some nearby rocks in the middle of the lake that heat up and start a plume of melt to the south three weeks before ice-out. The plume has appeared. Looking at around the third week of April. We'll see.

Not Long Pond. It's a small pond on Rt. 111 that some folks do stand up jet ski slalom courses on in the summer. I don't even know what the name is. Just south of the Gulf gas station. Also, Cobbetts pond seemed all but free of ice yesterday

I was on the ice a good part of yesterday with friends who were fishing. They reported a solid 12" in most areas, and they were riding sleds all over. There was a lot of slush on top but it was solid underneath. No real signs of seepage or weakening.
I took a walk on it this afternoon too. If anything, it's more solid than yesterday. The mushy slush that was on top yesterday solidified over night and didn't weaken much today. ![]() |

The pace of melting seems to have accelerated in the past 24 hours. I'm sure the rain last night helped.
On a walk this morning I noticed many new areas of open ground, and the snowbanks along our road were noticeably smaller than yesterday. The ground seemed firmer, indicating that the frost is leaving in many areas, and the local streams are running full force. The ice pack hasn't visually changed much. But I sense that the corner has turned, the next few nights temps notwithstanding. While there's some time to go, we should start to see noticeable change in the ice over the next few days. |

I seem to remember that someone said Lilly Pond was some sort of 2 week warning. It looks very slushy and has water pretty much all around it's shoreline.

One pic from my camp deck and one pic from my dock.
You can really see open water forming now. With the heavy winds coming in hopefully this ice will mostly blow away for the weekend and allow some fishing and accessibility to our camps!! Still keeping my fingers crossed! Dan |

Lake Winnipesaukee Ice-Out, Analyzing The 127 Years Of Data — To Celebrate Yesterday’s, i.e., April 17, Ice-Out For 2013.
http://nhlife.wordpress.com/2013/04/...-out-for-2013/ I did some quick analysis. One thing I quickly noticed is that people don’t pay enough attention to LEAP YEARS. In terms of days into the year, March 23 & March 24 are both 82 days in — depending on whether it is a leap-year or not. So to say that last year was the earliest ice-out is wrong in a way. You can read this blog post for some number crunching for ice-out on Lake Winnipesaukee. Enjoy! |

We are soooo excited about Ice Out, Last year we purchased our very 1st Formula and the week after suffered a major setback as a family where we went from elation to mourning, and putting life in perspective. Meaning we can always enjoy the lake and the wonderful people we know there, but life is fleeting, and you need to spend it with the ones you love. For us ice out is about paying remembrance to the ones we have lost and elation of the ones we still get to share the beauty of the lake with the ones we hold close, friends and family.
