Rifle caliber and history

I have been gifted a 7.55 Caliber Swiss carbine rifle.
Not sure of age but it iis in excellent condition. Bolt is unique with a pull-back bolt, really smoot, like a Mauser feel.... has a tilt-up type rear sight setup, short barrel, and fairly light in weight.

I have been told this rifle is very accurate and has same or similiar characteristics
of .308 caliber. That said could .308 ammo be used? If not is 7.55 ammo readily available,
and how expensive relaing to .308 cost?

Any info. about this rifle is appreciated. Would provide pics but believe may be against Forum policy?

Big Dog a quick google search yields lots of info. Looks like it runs 90 cents a round. Good luck!!

The Schmidt-Rubin rifle, if that's what yours is, probably uses the 7.55 X 55 mm round. The .308 Winchester approximates the 7.62 X 51 mm NATO round. US military used the 7.62 NATO round in the M-14. Today's standard US round is the 5.56 X 45 mm used in the M-16 and similar weapons. Also referred to as the .223 caliber round.

The NATO round and the .308 are sometimes interchangeable. You can look it up.

As in all weapons your Swiss carbine demands the correct cartridge. The math is self-evident. Thanks for bringing the Swiss rifle to our attention. Good luck.

I don't think that I would try a .308 in it, unless you have some very solid information indicating otherwise. I have been finding that locally .308 has been a bit tight, but 7.62 NATO is readily available. The .308 I have bought has been $0.75 per round on average.

If the round you need is the 7.55 x 55mm, it is available online. Sportsman's Guide has some for about $1.25 per round presently.
