I will be in the pits volunteering on Friday from 12-4. Before that I will be at the Lakes Region Power Squadron booth. Please stop by and say hi.

Default The Delay

We took the boat over late morning and saw one race before 10:45 AM. We heard that there were no more races until 12:30 PM so we left and went back then. We anchored and waited two hours and finally about 2:45 one boat came out and went in circles around the course for about 10 laps and went back to the dock.

I am not sure of the reason for the delay but we gave up and went home. Maybe someone here has more information.

There were issues with wind in the afternoon. There was a pretty stiff wind from the SW, that Barndoor Island didn't do a good enough job of blocking.

Eventually the Jersey Skills and the large hydroplanes did run around 2:30-3:00

Smile Vintage Race Boat Regatta

Got over to Wolfeboro around 10AM Saturday and drifted around in front of the Mini mount house for about an hour but there was not an awful lot of activity so my kids and I bounced over to Ellocoyia where we anchored and as usual the Lake took care of the rest! Just a couple of more pilgrimages from Bahhstin to the lake and it will be nap time for Dawn. Way too short summer. Great photos of what we thought we would see.

Sorry you missed some of the events in the morning. We ran all events including the big hydros at 10:20 and 10:40. Then at 11:05 we brought all patrol boats and picket boats in for lunch break. At 12:00 we ran the Gold Cups. Then the wind picked up out of the South. The conditions got worst with the winds were gusting at 16 knots.

At 12:50 Sister Syn ran five laps. Sister Syn is a 1925 36' Dodge built boat that was built for race boat driver, auto magnate, Horace E. Dodge. After that event we made a decision to cancel the outboards that were to run at 1:05 and 1:25. We were on schedule up until that time. We sent out the Jersey Skiffs because they can handle the rougher conditions. Then they reported that the conditions were not good especially at the South end of the course. We waited until 3:00 at which time we ran a seltzer cat from Canada. His boat actually lifts off the water and has an arerion to control his angle to the wind. He was able to exceed 100MPH and said it was great out there for his boat. Then at 3:45 we sent out two big hydros. One hydro was able to take the conditions and on the back stretch of the course was able to do approximately 120MPH. His boat can exceed 150. The other hydro made one lap and came in.

In this APBA sanctioned event we take extra precondition to make sure all participants are safe. We don't want to take any chances for the safety of the drivers as well as their boats and event spectators. So we go beyond to make sure we have an event without any incidents.

Again out apologies for not having the full schedule of events in the Afternoon. In the morning we were on schedule and all boats performed. Then the winds picked up. It is difficult to forecast the conditions that Mother Nature will throw at us. Friday the lake was flat and we had all boats perform as scheduled.

Thank you for your interest and thank you for coming over to Wolfeboro. Sorry for the disappointing afternoon. Otherwise it was a beautiful day on the lake

A bunch of classes didn't run in the AM either....

We got there right after the first heat. We watched as the WinniBelle went out to her spot...

They ran Jersey Skiffs, Flat Bottoms & Hydros... That was it! We stayed until the WinniBelle & the rest went in... The classes we did see run were cool.. especially the J-Boats & the Big Hydros! The red J-boat was fun to watch battling it out with the white one for the lead!

They hydros were impressive!

Would have been great if they ran the mid Hydros & Big OB's in the morning, or at least posted the updated schedule online...

Glad you liked the Jersey Skiffs and the big hydros. They do put on an impressive show. The rooster tails are so large that if you were to weigh the water that is in the air the weight could exceed 3-4000 pounds.

Unfortunately Woodsy, you must have missed the earlier heats. We started at 8:00AM with the triple woody cockpits. At 8:15 Sister Syn ran. Then at 8:35 I sent out the small outboards. Then the large outboards made their run 8:50. At that point we were a bit ahead of schedule. The Winni Belle didn't go out until 9:20 and got to her position at 9:35. The course was set at 9:40 when I released the Jersey Skiffs. A couple of the Mid hydros didn't run do to mechanical issues. But I keep to the published schedule except for being about 5 minutes ahead early on. We pulled the patrol and picket boats in at 11:05 for lunch and then I sent them out again at 11:50. That is about the time when the wind started to pick up and only until then I was not able to follow the schedule.

Thank you for your suggestion about updating changes on line. I just don't know how we would do that real time. As it was in the afternoon we were on hold due to water conditions for extended periods of time. As the Race Director and providing commentary, I keep the spectators on land advised and I would update them frequently. As for the spectators in boats, not sure how I would do that. There is a great deal of activity at any given moment and to try to communicate with the boaters, as well, would be somewhat difficult.

But if any of you have suggestions how we can improve the Regatta please let me know. The committee will start planning the 2017 Wolfeboro Vintage Race Boat Regatta beginning of the new year.

Many thanks....

Chasedawg...

We timed out visit per the schedule posted on the nhbm.org website. The large OB's were scheduled to run at 9:25... After the Belle departed. We got there at the end of what was supposed to be the Small OB class...

If you are going to change the published schedule you should let people know... especially if you are running 2 classes 1/2+ hour earlier than posted. We had an old school OB fan on the boat who was a little disappointed.

Oh well... try again in 2 years!

Woodsy,

I agree a very important detail that got overlooked. The agenda changes at least three times the day before leading up to the event. It changes sometimes as the drivers arrive and putting in requests at the last moment. We will need to make sure all changes are made on line as well. I will take this concern to the committee tomorrow when we meet to debrief. Thanks for your input. Now I see why there is confusion with the schedule.

You might want to think about coming to Wolfeboro by car and see all the boats in the pits. We actually open the pits twice a day and you can even talk to the owners/ drivers. And throughout the day you can walk the around out of the pits right up close to the each boat. The outboards are in a separate area and the boats are available to view and talk to the drivers any time. Your friend would have loved that. A guy from Maryland had a old 130HP Chrysler with tuned exhaust. Another outboard kneel boat from Florida had an old Chrysler 70 and called his engine "junkyard refugee". But that boat fast and load. It was the loudest boat there other than the hydros. This same guy builds racing outboards for the past 30 years. He and several others hold world records.

What was really fun, I took the mic and walked around talking to people/drivers over the speaker system to keep the interest going on down times. We had the National Gold Cup Champion and world record holder there that won the Gold Cup three times. Very cool.

Chasedawg...

It is an AWESOME event, and thank you & the others for putting in the time to make it happen! I cant wait for 2017!

I have been to the pits before, and while its cool to see the boats up close and personal, the sound and view from the water is unmatched. The echo of the hydros was amazing!

I LOVE old raceboats, I think they are amazing! I would love to see a vintage offshore type race with the old Aronow Cigarettes, Donzis & Formulas, the old Bertrams etc...

Thanks again!

Great job. We were anchored next to the whaler with the flag so I was getting updates from him!

Check this video out. You will experience what it is like riding in a bid hydro doing well over 120MPH. This Concordia is capable of reaching speeds of 180MPH.
