There is brown gunk showing up in strange places near the water. I'm wondering if anyone else has seen it and knows what it is. I suspect mold, but have never seen anything like it. It has shown up covering parts of a stainless steel boat railing, all over a mooring rope leading out to the boat, some spots on my sail, and on a wooden post of the dock. It is thin, blotchy, and comes off if scraped with a fingernail or knife, but leaves a brown stain behind. Mold makes sense, given the weather we have been having, but perhaps its alien egg pods from mars. Any ideas? thanks...

I hesitate to offer my inexperienced opinion (especially to Lake geezer, whose name epitomizes someone of mature years probably having lived here for years) but got to thinking about the "brown stuff". Any possibility it is "days old" pollen. I've never seen pollen at the level it is this year but a few days ago as I went past Trexler's marina and rounded the curve to the bridge to Long Island, I could not believe my eyes - a foot wide, beach long wave of yellow pollen was washing up on the sand. It hasn't been back since but don't know if just washes here and there around the lake and when it coats something, just darkens in the very few minutes of sun we've had here and there. Dunno! The two weeks of cold rain, followed by the humidity and sun (and storms) now followed by the rain and cold again - wonder if that has caused anything too (you referenced it in your post). Gee, who knows, instead of aliens, it's maybe molecules of "The Blob" (remember that movie?). Shades of the theme song from "Jaws"! Good luck getting it off your equipment.
