Seafood recs

My daughter will be visiting from Philadelphia next week. She wants to experience New England seafood. Any suggestions? Prefer not over an hour away from Wolfeboro. Thank you very much.

Ton of places towards the coast--Petey's, Ray's, The Old Salt, etc. etc.--but not much in the Wolfeboro area. My choice in the neighborhood would be The Bob House--I LOVE their fried platter.

It’s worth the trip to the seacoast for the freshest seafood. We went to the Old Salt Saturday night and it was great as usual.

I've not been in a while, but the last time I got the Neptune's Platter was the best seafood meal I've had in a longggg time.

Should be able to get to the coast in less than an hour. Also, where depends on a little on what you want. classic fried, lobster, baked haddock, clams

New England sea food is very often a seafood platter, fried. That is usually a measure of how well they fry food, not the seafood itself. If I want good seafood i find Portsmouth is the closest ( 1 hour from you ) place for quality seafood. Two choices I would consider there are Jumpin Jays, or Row 34. Both have excellent seafood, a lot of it off the boat , and nicely done. Upscale and worth it. Simple New England platters or lobster, go to Newicks in Dover.

Assuming you are not proposing the seafood at this establishment is substandard, I agree that fresh cooking oil and a competent chief is essential.

Otherwise, I would return here in a flash.

This. The key to good fried food is clean oil and temp control. Anything that turns out greasy was fried in cold oil or left in too long. Watch the Alton Brown episode Fry Hard and he explains that frying is essentially steaming and as soon as the steam stops pushing out, oil rushes in.

There is something to be said for a cook that really knows how to fry stuff.

I fried my turkey this year and while waiting for it to be done dropped in a few oreos coated in pancake batter and some torn off pieces of pop up dinner rolls with cheese inside. Thanks me later.

You got the Neptune? You mean you and three other people? It can easily feed four and when you do it’s like a fried seafood buffet.

Lyons Den has great swordfish, scallops, fish, etc, they are in Gilford. O’s in Laconia also offers some seafood dishes and is excellent.

How about Jena's Lobster Quest on Rt 16 in Ossipee. She has the best clam chowder, whole belly clams and lobster roll in the area in my opinion. Jena's is only open Thursday through Sunday in the winter. My family's favorite during our summer visits.

Jena's just north of the intersection of 28 and 16 in Ossipee is quite good.

I will also recommend the Haddock Sandwich at the Mountainview Station in Ossipee. They have a number of other seafood selections as well.

Jena's is great seafood. However, I think they close in the winter. I've eaten there many times and we order a lobsters for a reunion every summer.

Best thing you can do is tell her to stay home and visit during June, July, or August.

If she comes during that summer time frame then you can take a spin over to POPS Fried Clams in Alton Bay, and obtain some of the best whole clams (which I think you like yourself) plus some great scallops!

Bobhouse is, indeed, excellent for fish dishes! And the Union Diner (a few doors down from the intersection of Route 11 and Weirs Boulevard (Laconia) has great haddock (fried or not) and I hear the fried clams are excellent. I hear Lyons Den has great scallops.

As you know seafood in Wolfeboro off season is tough. Portsmouth is the way to go or head east to ME for the best!

Jumpin Jays is great! More on the cuisine side. Downtown Portsmouth is pretty for the holidays. Especially Strawberry Banke!

While eating at the Union Diner (some time ago) some other patron at a nearby table ordered fish...I recall smelling “bad fish smell” as the scent of the meal wafted by...made a mental note to never order the fish there.
When buying or experiencing a fish dinner anywhere you should not be able to smell a fishy odor.

If flying in from Philly...first consider flying into Manchester not Logan due to convenience and frequent flights to/from Philly. If you land there, consider:
Hooked in Manchester and
Surf in Nashua as two good seafood destinations.

Granite Steak Grille, Rochester; can't go wrong; something for everybody.
Windjammers, Rochester; next to the RR tracks; simple.
Atlantic Grille, Rye; worth the ride; enjoy the Seacoast. More upscale, worth the price, especially if you've already traveled from Philadelphia.

Tilton House of Pizza, downtown Tilton: I was surprised and greatly pleased wtih the haddock as well as the pizza, subs and Italian choices. Great family run place. Don't know if they have whole clams. Generous portions, very fair prices. Whoda thunk it!
