I’ll be in NH for Christmas.
The following was inspired by the crew from the forum. Thanks for the inspiration McDude (Post Cards), RG (Maps), DRH(Pictures), IG (Adventures), Pepper (Lobster), Upthesaukee (weather report etc), Winnie Diver(Keeping me straightened out), Webmaster Don (making it exist) and all the rest that make this a great place. This is a follow up for “In Ancient Times”. Christmas in Ancient Times. The hardiest neighbors stayed with Winnie and Peasaukee through the cold and snowy weather. They kept busy building log homes, cutting logs for fires and sitting around the fires to stay warm. They would celebrate a special time called Christmas. The best log was brought into the log homes and decorated with cones and specially made ornaments. The openings in the log homes were light with many candles. On a special Night everyone would gather at the central large building to pray, song, and thank the Great Spirit for all the things that they had received during the year. They gave a special thanks for the marvelous beauty and peace of the place that they lived in. After their gathering, everyone would go back to their log and await the arrival of a special friend. He would arrive by his custom flying sled accompanied by his reindeer and visit only boys and girls who had been good for the whole year. He visited all the log homes and left gifts for the good children. The next day neighbors would visit everyone and bring presents and food. A great meal was had with all of Winnie and Peasaukee friends. The water of the Great Spirits Smile would be tested to see if it was hard. When DRH declared the water hard enough then everyone would go sledding and playing on the hard water. The McDude River would become hard first and people would slide down it. If there was much snow then Upthesaukee would lead friend on a snow walk through the forest. They would wear shoes specially made for walking on the snow. Others would climb Peasaukee’s Mountain and then they would put bark on their feet and slid down to the bottom. Some would race each other. A merry time would be had by all. Everyone would greet their neighbors with “Merry Christmas”.
