	 | Train on Moultonborough Neck?!

Ok, so today while sitting by the campfire, we heard what we swear was a train horn...a lot. There's no train that can be heard at Arcadia/Moultonborough Neck, right?! I immediately passed it off as a large boat, but the more we heard it the more we were convinced it was a train. Sent from my SM-G990U1 using Tapatalk |

Given how sound works, it could be a boat, but it just didn't sound like it or come from that direction. Sent from my SM-G990U1 using Tapatalk | |

Most steamboat whistles have a high pitch. The one this morning had a much lower pitch, similar to a train.

There was a train that passed through the Weirs somewhere around the 1:00 hour but that would be amazing if you were able to hear it

I have a steam train whistle purchased when they scrapped the B & M steam engines in the 1950's. It hasn't been used since we closed the shop in 1975, but it is very possible others bought similar whistles. Based on my experience, most of the steam boats don't have enough excess steam pressure to blow the whistle much and continue turning the propeller, but it could be connected to an air air compressor and make an occasional toot. Mine is about 16" tall and maybe 7" diameter with a 1 1/2" feed pipe. Five chines and very pretty sound.

	 | Boat horn

You may have seen that big, quad-engined Midnight Express out and around the lake. It has an unbelievably loud triple or quad horn, I would say maybe like a train or very loud semi. We were pulling out of North Water this morning and it let loose as it was coming under the bridge. Really made me jump! I think if I heard that in the distance it could be mistaken for a train horn.

I was on the neck working on a boat today and heard it as well. I also heard it last year while shrink wrapping a boat near Long Island, it is from the train in the Weirs. I live in the Weirs and it’s the same horn, I’ve heard it all summer for 9 years now. Sound travels quite a ways over the lake. |

Novelty? I have a novelty one that sound exactly like that. You can carry it in your hands and blow through it to make it whistle or, as I do, use the air from a compressor to sound it off. The louder you blow the louder it gets, hence the air compressor. Perhaps a fellow camp owner has one. (I do not live in Moultonboro or Moultonborough). |
