Hi, all!
My son will be working up at the lake this summer, so we're looking for a cabin tent to set up on a platform we have that he could set up his own cot, etc. I can get exact measurements, but I'm thinking 8x8/10x10 or so and old-style canvas, but we're open to other suggestions/ideas/options. Thanks! Sent from my SM-S931U using Tapatalk |

For $849.99, shipping included from eBay, you can buy a brand new 10x10' Kodiak Canvas Tent 6173 10x10 Stove Lodge Hot Tent Quality Scout Tent Camping with many features including screened windows that can be zipped covered or open.
It looks like a 1962 Girl Scout camping tent set on a tent platform at Camp Monotomy.

A tent camper is probably the way to go, up off the ground and usually sealed up pretty good to protect from insects & rodents.

My inexpensive little Coleman two person dome tents served me well for hundreds of nights while riding thousands of dirt road miles on my motorcycle.
The riding buddies had fancier tents that leaked but mine never let a drop in. The secret to my success was a double treatment of Kiwi Camp Dry. After a very generous first coat that I would rub in with a sponge I allowed it to dry for a few hours. Another coat was next including the sponging. A day or two of airing out would render it waterproof and minimize the smell. Whatever the tent, this product will improve it. This link is for a box of ten cans. You may have a little left over when used on a tent of the size you are seaking. Kiwi Clear Camp Dry Fabric Protector 10.5 oz. https://a.co/d/fX6ChNd |

For $75, I bought a 7-man tent from Amazon to house some youngsters. That measure runs too small for one teenager with customary appurtances. (Clothing, tools, cabinetry, water, potty, poncho, bug spray, food stores, electrical devices). However, it only takes about ten minutes to set up.
I tried it out and discovered a whole new world out there! (Many more Owls, mink running across the entry, early-rising Loons taking off right in front of me). The entry zipped-up tightly, but I'd suggest regular application with a small bar of soap (kept handy) to keep it supple. Rain and winds weren't a factor because of its deep-woods location; however, once the fabric got soaked, heavy raindrops would "spritz" the interior. )Large dead branches hanging overhead definitely were disquieting. Hours-long rain with thunder and lightning could be terrifying. (But especially thunder!) ![]() Another concern was roaming bears, which only became a concern years later. Bear spray would aleve such unease with these large intrusive animals. BTW: There's also stand-up room to consider. The 7-man [pop-up] tent had about 5.5 feet of overhead. (Not bad)...

Many towns have zoning restrictions on RV/camper use such as a 2-week limit.
I would stay away from canvas. We spent many years backpacking with a Eureka 2-person tent and then later car camping with a Eureka dome tent. While Eureka is now out of business, there are other good brands. Look for a 10x10 dome tent with rain fly and vestibule. And seal the seams. Alan |

You know the A.M.C. caretakers at WMNF shelters and tent sites like Liberty Spring tent site and Garfield Ridge Shelter are early 20's men and women who live from early June to early Sept in a 10'x10' traditional canvas tent with a ridgeline. Maybe it's an 8 x 10 but I'm thinking it's a 10x10.
If you Google 'Appalachian Mt Club, back country caretakers' maybe see what they use for living in a tent for three months on a platform built with pt lumber. For $1800 eBay has a luxury temple yurt large enough to hold a ten people yoga class plus a hot wood stove. This ten yoga yurt tent is made in Alaska and looks very native Alaska luxurious. This large yurt tent could maybe become a place-to-go out on the Winnipesaukee islands ....... a ten yoga yurt tent with a wood stove and chimney (not included) ...... just like summer camp for young adults out there on Lake Winnipesaukee ....... the smile of the Great Spirit ........ ....... namaste!
