For those of you on the island that have tasty little pets, there definitely are coyotes present. We found the leg of a deer and nearby saw dog type scat with lots of deer hair in it. Saw that in many places. Just thought it might be of interest.

There was a farily good-sized population in Melvin Village recently. I recall an article in the Grunter a few years ago (around September) which recounted an incident in which a family's dog was severely injured by a "pack" of coyotes that reportedly lived in the nearby woods.
A few years ago, I nearly hit one on the Mass Turnpike -- between I-84 and 495 -- in the middle of the day on a sunny July Saturday. We have a healthy population of them down here in PA as well. |

why are the shots expensive? Does insurance (if you have it) not cover these shots for some reason? I also thought I read somewhere that the new shots they have these days for rabbies are NOT as painful or time consuming as they used to be...

We did not see any coyote tracks on our hike, but saw more than four different spots where their deer hair laden, fresh deposits were made.

They might be coy dogs, too. We get some in MA. If anyone doesn't know what coys are, they're a cross-breed between a dog and coyote, so the product it a really big, relatively mean coyote that might resemble a dog.
One night I was trying to sleep in Meredith (Sachem Cove Road), and I thought I heard cheering. The Mount had just gone by (must've been a Thursday then) but I couldn't believe that the cheers were coming from miles away. Then I heard the howl, which freaked me out to the extreme. It's eerie to hear the coyotes at night.
