I just have to share something that happened to my family Tuesday night. We were driving on Route 28A in Alton, headed towards Route 11 and Wolfeboro. There was a red 1981 Corvette with NH plates in front of us (and if you were the driver, you now know who you are and I have your plate number firmly embedded in my brain). The car pulled over to the side of the road, but didn't stop moving forward so we weren't sure what he was doing. He did finally stop in front of a driveway, blocking it so that the car coming towards us couldn't pull in. This left little room for us to pass. After about a half a second, the guy opened his window and started screaming at us to pass him, using a huge variety of colorful language.

We passed and went along our way, scratching our heads and wondering what this guy's problem was. At the intersection of 28A and 11, he was two cars behind us, opened his window again and continued screaming at my husband, using every offensive word in the book plus a few others not in the book as well as the charming hand gesture.

My kids were in the car as were my three nieces. My two boys, both under ten, want to know why this guy was so mad at their dad and what the middle finger meant. Now, being from NJ (and having learned to drive in Massachusetts - no cracks, now), I am familiar with this sort of behavior on our major highways, but in NH?? I never would have thought it would happen here. The guy might have been drunk, but that is really no excuse. If I had had the presense of mind at the time, I would have phoned the Alton police, but I didn't think of it until I saw the car 20 minutes later pulling in Wolfeboro.

Anyway, I was so shocked, I thought I would share this story with you wise locals.

Many of the drivers here in NH may indeed have NH plates on their vehicles, but that doesn't necessarily mean they are natives. Many residents of this fine state have moved here from many of those areas that have 'bad driving reputations'. The people may change their place of residence and change their plates and where they are registered to vote (just want to remind those who may have forgotten to do this), but the driving habits they learned from where ever, will stay with them for a long long time (having spent many years travleing to those fine states I got my exposure of different driving "styles").

Naah Cal this is simply a case of pilfered Prozac, as in his got stolen and now he's a raving lunatic Other than that perhaps he mistook JG for someone else who "wronged" him back down the road. Or he's just an a.., hmmm, mule's rectum.


ps - JG, I think you mean RT28 towards Wolfeboro (28A empties into 28). RT11, 11A, 11B, 11C and even 11D are up the other side of Alton Bay. There may be an 11E for all I know Gotta love the NH way of numbering hiways.

I think you'd be safe to add Rtes' 3, 3A, US 3, 93, 293. LOL, I find it funny, though I know it is extremely heartbreaking to some, when going south on 93 they take the ramp after the tolls for 93 to Salem and Boston when they actually want to go straight south to 93/3 and the Everett Turnpike. I remember being a passenger in my father-in laws car coming home from the mountains one year. I told them not to take that right. They said I didn't know the way. Wrong. I spent every summer at the lake with mom and her parents and now take my kids up to the lake to spend their summers. Well you should have heard him scream when he got to 495 in MA way up further north than Chelmsford!

Yeah, but he saved $.75 by missing the Bedford Tolls and missed a whole lotta construction delay south of the MA border. I doubt he lost any time since he entered 495 south of Lawrence bridge mess too.

As far the Vette driver goes, there's plenty of jerks everywhere. NH has it's share. I would not sweat it. Maybe the guy was having a really bad day. BTW, 28A toward Wolfeboro comes out on route 28, not 11. 11 goes toward Gilford from Alton.

I think NJ drivers are more polite than NH drivers, in general. NJ has more reasonable speed limits on secondary roads too. NH seems to like 35 MPH limits on back roads (like 28A) that just scream for a 50 or 60 MPH limit. Roads like 28 in Salem NH are posted at 30 or 35 MPH; in NJ, they'd be posted at 50 (like route 35). That said, I think NH is a far better place for me to live.

I think NH just has a slower life style. In Jersey everybody's in a hurry to be somewhere. A neighbor in the next block from me has a license tag"AM L8 TU"

I was wondering how you could identify the year of the car -- and now I know. (It appears right on the car).

Psyches with a strong product-identity bond, like Corvette, Harley, Baja, et. al., can be very sensitive. Better give him more "personal space". Following too closely could have triggered his rage at you and yours.

Years ago, my father told me three things:

1. Never argue with a woman.


2. Never argue with a woman.


3. In case there has been some kind of misunderstanding, just remember guys, you never argue with a woman.

Of course, the lesson here, besides the obvious (that's the arguing thingee), is the guy in the corvette obviously has a lot more money than common sense, courtesy, and contentment. Jersey Girl, just tell the kids that the guy was telling you what his IQ was, and try to have a good day in spite of the #@%$&$#!

Okay, I just asked my kids (who, regrettably were in the car), and they swear, so to speak, that the offending Corvette was red. Could there be two out there with the year on the plate? So, if you really took a baseball bat to that blue one, oops.

Also, yes, it was Route 28A heading towards 28 into Wolfeboro. I don't know what I was thinking. I know Route 11 heads toward the Weirs and I have driven on all of those other 11's. Very strange system.

And, lastly, we weren't anywhere near the guy in the Corvette when he pulled over. My husband is careful to a fault. He would never tailgate. I, on the other hand, having learned to drive in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have no qualms about tailgating even if the slow car is a Corvette.

I am still on the lookout. I will find him and do . . . well, something.

Another possibility (night): HEADLIGHTS.

SUVs and station wagons, when overloaded towards the rear, point the headlights too high on low beam. For a low-slung (and too-heavy) Corvette, that could have triggered his brand-identity thingy.

I pull over (like the Vette did) for HEADLIGHTS, propane trucks, gasoline trucks, and tailgaters with a propane/gasoline truck tailgating the tailgater.

(And "just leave earlier").

Okay,

1. That looks like the right plate.

2. You said the car you saw was blue. Dark red is definitely not blue.

3. We drive a van. No headlights were on. I don't remember the time of day now, but it was definitely daytime. No headlights.
