Folk Cellar -- Wolfeboro

For those of you who frequent Wolfeboro, you may have noticed a new business that opened up in the early spring. The Folk Cellar, 25 North Main Street, roughly across from the Yum-Yum Shop and Dive Winnipesaukee.

They sell a wide range of acoustic & electric instrument, provide lessons, do expert repairs on all types of instruments, and even have a nice recording studio on premises.

You can usually find Mark Dearborn repairing instruments behind the counter, and he's more than happy to take a break and play just about any instrument in the store. The instruments on display range from basic acoustic guitars, five-string banjos, mandolins and ukeleles, to violins and a good assortment of electric guitars.

I had an old four-string banjo in disrepair that I was interested in restoring (I play 5-string, so this was intriguing). Mark fixed it up and made it playable in no time, and at a very reasonable price. We bought a uke there for one of our sons earlier in the year, and they were very helpful in helping us select the right instrument.

Stop in and check them out. It's a very nice addition to the Wolfeboro merchant scene!

Oh, neat!

But don't tell Argie... we have 7 guitars and a bass (the bass is mine) and four amps already... Argie has a bad case of G.A.S. (gear aquisition syndrome)

I have been there myself and found it fantastic! I also play guitar, acustic, and love country, rock, jazz. We should get a group going here on Winnipesaukee.com for the next Forum!
NOTE: I said I play acoustic..but I didn't say I was good! I am at the point where I need someone to play with me and teach me a few tricks. I read Tabs and cords, and learning to read music. It's a lot of fun, even at my age! (don't ask..LOL)

There's a really nice article about the Folk Cellar on page 29 of the September issue of New Hampshire Magazine, also, called "Living the Dream". It's about Franz Haase, who owns the store, and how he came about opening it...........

Hi Gang,
I went back to the "Folk Celler," in Wolfeboro, this past weekend, just to drool over the guitars. Here's what a NICE guy the owner is!
A lady came in, and wanted to purchase a guitar for her daughter's Birthday, and was looking for some guidence, since guitars cost about $295+ for a half decent one. Now MOST business would set her right up and make a "quick sale". The owner asked if her daughter already played the guitar, to which the lady replied NO. The owner (I am assuming he owned the place) explained that playing a guitar takes a lot of practice, hard work, and warned her, many "Students' Quit, as soon as their fingers start to hurt. (anyone who plays guitar knows, your fingers will hurt until you build up the calouses), and guitars end up on ebay and yard sales. He suggested she, instead, give her daughter some lessons, with a "rental Guitar," until her daughter knows she wants to learn. He said that usually takes about four lessons, THEN if she likes it, he would put the rental fees toward a new guitar for her! The lady agreed and bought her daughter 4 lessons. WHAT A GREAT GUY! Most business (like I have been in, looking at guitars) would try and sell you what ever caught you eye, and make the "Quick Buck." This guy did the right thing, helped her find the right "gift," probably saved her some money (and grief) and treated her like a professional would. THAT's The kind of business I will ALWAYS do business with! I have been looking for a new electric guitar, and I am going back to look for a new guitar (when I get some money) and he is the only one I'd deal with now!

Eagle -- Go ahead and pick up that '72 or '74 cream-colored Telecaster hanging in the corner. You deserve it. And while you're at it, that '62 Vega Pete Seeger banjo has been calling my name for months...

Hi Grant,
Acutally, I had my eyes on that Ibanez Hollow Core, or the Eppiphone Electric. That Taylor was REAL tempting, but my wife was with me, and the price tag, would have got me hit over the head with it, before I ever got to play it! LOL!

I have a nice Strat for sale right now.....Flamed/quilted Maple. Case and all the little stuff too goes with it. Hey I have to try....

$900.00 Cost $1500.00 and I was told it was a rare top by the guys at Fender.
They have flamed and quilted but they rarely get in quilted and flamed together in one piece of wood. I have no idea but that is what I was told. Had a mPle neck but changed ot to a Rosewood neck for a better sound.

Those are absolutely BEAUTIFUL! A wee bit out of my price range, but thank you for "trying," as you say. Bring them to the Wolfeboro store, maybe he will take them on consignment! I'm not sure if he does that kind of selling, but as you said, it's worth "trying!"

I play acoustic guitar—just not lately.

I wasn't going to mention it, but my favorite kind of music isn't "any of the above".

Hi Grant, That Vega was calling my name also until I saw the price - WOW! I guess I'll stick with my long neck 63 ODE and my 71 Martin/Vega.

Store is very friendly. They do take consignments but I was told no trades at this time but may depend on what it is.

For me this store is much more convenient than driving to Ashland. Hope they do well.

Argie found The Folk Cellar today when he did his usual jaunt to the gym... Came back home with all good things to say and plans to go to their open mic afternoons on Saturdays.

(Methinks I need to hide his credit cards before he goes, tho...)
