I've created an album on PhotoPost containing a number of pictures taken during our trip up the Mount Washington Auto Road on 10/4/05. While technically not "lake-related", I thought some of the Forum members might enjoy seeing the view from the top of the mountain.
The photos can be viewed by clicking here. Here's an example of the view from the top: ![]()

HI Don,
My husband hiked Mt Washington 10/3 and here's a sample of one of his photos looking down at Lake of the Clouds from the top! What glorious weather up there this week. By the way..I have a hard time tolerating the auto road. I think there must be a phobia named for "falling off the mountain" ![]() pmj |

I know what you mean about the narrow, winding auto road. Most of it is paved, but several long sections are not. There's no guard rail, and it's amazing that the road's safety record is as good as it is. One moment of inattention and you could be ... "falling off the mountain"! That's why everyone is instructed to drive both up and down the road in 1st gear.

I, too, have acrophobia, and have never been to the summit of The Mountain. Not the auto road, and especially not the Cog Railway. But I sure do appreciate these photos. Breathtaking, to say the least. How a State so warm and beautiful can be so truly majestic at the same time, amazes me.
I am listening to Irish music now...about the homeland, etc, and for me, that is New England. I see by the Weirscam that it is totally dark.....the summer is over. Have a great weekend, all. ![]()

I drove up Mt. Washington in late August with my two boys. I had done it for the first time last year in my Windstar. This was the first trip in my Explorer. It was really no problem at all - until the trip down. On the way up, we had seen that a Jeep or something similar had gone off into a ditch. She was barely off the road and I couldn't understand why the driver didn't just put it in reverse and back out. She was, of course, on the inside, not on the about-to-go-over-the-cliff side, and had been headed up.
Anyway, we never thought about it again until we can down and had to stop while a tow truck pulled her out. However, that tow truck was a wee bit too wide for that section of the road (no pavement - just gravel here). We were on the outside (the about-to-go-over-the-cliff side ![]() ![]() I may never drive up there again. That was plenty for me. Jersey Girl |

Jersey Girl,
I love going up the Mountian but don't like the drive. I've hiked it in my youth and driven up it since getting married. One day before our kids were born my husband's brother and wife thought it would be nice to go up there. My husband's blazer was the car of choice (standard shift). Anyways just as we cleared the treeline in rolled a huge fog bank. It got so bad, I had to get out and walk the edge of the road the rest of the way up telling them where the edge was. Needless to say by the time we got to the top my husband and I were not talking. The three of them were in the museum and I was still fuming at the top in the parking lot. I was not alone though. LOL,as we had gotten one of the first parking spaces in the lot, almost every car that finally made it up asked me how much further & where is the parking lot. You couldn't even see it. There were lots of husbands/wives mad at each other that day. Finally the sun broke out above as the bank settled into the valley below tree line and we had a more comfortable ride down. I will never forget that trip though.

I agree, the Auto Road is soooo scarry!
![]() My husband and I went up about 4-5 years ago, and were too chicken to drive ourselves - so we opted to do the "tour van". I'm sure it was much less nerve-racking than driving ourselves, but it was still quite frightning! The tour drivers take the trip up and down every day, so they are used to it and probably don't go quite as slow as the other people driving themselves up! But I kept reminding my self that "this driver does this everyday, she knows what she's doing"! But this was the way to go, we could both view the sites, without having to pull over all the time. It's definately worth the money! The funniest part going up was when our "tour-guide" pointed out to us to look at the cars comming down - see the different expressions on the faces. It was funny - and that was my face comming down too! ![]() |

Bump that up to 34" and winds 134 MPH according to the last observer comment I read. They have a photo posted too of the snow underneath in an entryway.
