So I passed my NH required course but I’ve never actually captained anything other then a PWC. I’m thinking I’d like to buy a Boston Whaler but before doing anything I was planning to rent a different boats to see what I like. However, I’d really like someone to give me practical hands on instruction on how everything works.
Is there such a thing as practical lessons or does everyone just have a friend with a boat? Thanks |

Congratulations for getting into boating.
Most likely we got started by an old timer needing a companion when we were 13. Spent time with him/her until we bought our own boat. The next thing you know you are captain of a 37 foot sportfisher. Eventually downsizing as years go by. I found this on line and it may be helpful. http://onthewatertraining.com/ ---------------------------------------------- I am a retired workaholic and continuing aquaholic |

Two pieces of constructive criticism for your site though: 1.) I don't see that it needs to be SSL secured given the content and without proper certificate...many will not visit due to browser warnings 2.) Probably not best "form" to have a picture of a woman drinking a beer while at the helm on the front page of a site selling proper instruction on the water. Good luck with your business! If my wife even considers taking the helm I will keep you in mind. |

The Sweet Velocity site has both a Contact form and Shopping Cart ordering system which should be secured by a valid SSL certificate. Google considers both of those functions as data collection and will drop your ranking without SSL.
The installed certificate is just expired and I'm sure it will be updated soon. Sweet Velocity is a new advertiser on this site this year and I hope you'll consider their services.

As an FYI to my previous post above where I mentioned JP boating, It appears JP boating is now Sweet Velocity owned by Janice Nazarenko formerly Janice Powell.
I can attest to her boat instructing skills as she did a great job with my wife! I highly recommend this company! Dan

Your boat sales person should be showing you how to safely operate any boat you may purchase. What size whaler are you looking for?

I applaud anyone who shows a willingness to learn how to be a safe boat operator before jumping in with both feet. Yes, a salesman will show a new boat owner how to operate, but going out and learning the controls of a boat is not the same as gaining real experience. In my opinion, there are way to many inexperienced boat drivers out there already (too many in boats that are too big and powerful for their experience) - I wish more people were willing to take the time to learn.

There are also a number of good books on the subject. These will help you get the information in your head. Then some careful practice with an experienced friend and you're got to go (carefully).
Formal lessons would be valuable if you can work them into your schedule but but telling a buddy you'll pay for the gas for a day in the water will work too. Good luck! |

I just had an enlightening phone call with Janis earlier today. Sounds to me like she will accomodate to a multitude of details including Y chromosomes.
