Okay, I am reduced to asking for help. It pains me to do so, but I must. I finally give up - I cannot figure out where this picture was taken from. Can someone ease my pain???

It looks to me like that island in the foreground is Welch. I am guessing that it was taken from the mini-mountain above Belknap Point in Gilford.

That's was my first thought, but if it is Welch, from that vantage point, shouldn't there be open water to the right?

That's Round Island in the foreground. Dollar Island is the little island behind Round. In the way-back, that's the left edge of Five-Mile Island that aligns with the left edge of Dollar Island. If I use my trusty Bizer map and draw a straight line from the left edge of Five-Mile through the left-edge of Dollar, it appears that the photo was taken from Belknap Mountain.
I walked up the trail to Belknap Mountain in June. It's a pretty view. Unfortunately, a panorama camera view isn't too good. Too much of the lake is blocked by radio towers and Gunstock Mountain. ---Addendum--- After reading Rob's post (the next post), I think he is correct about the location from which the photograph was taken. The straight line from Five-Mile Island past Dollar Island passes over Locke's Hill and runs darn close to the tower about a mile SE of Locke's Hill. Last edited by Bizer; 09-03-2004 at 12:46 PM. |

I think the islands named by Bizer are correct, but I would have to say that I think the photo was taken from a closer vantage point than Belknap Mountain, and possibly a slightly different angle. I would guess that the photographer was atop Locke's Hill or at the farthest, the hill that forms the east side of Gunstock Acres, which is in line with, but higher than, Locke's Hill.
I assume that Locke's Hill is the mini mountain that Zee was referring to. Having said that, I am hardly a map maker ![]() It's a great picture though. Rob |
