Default Great Places

As I was responding to the Jackson Star Thread, a thought came to mind- how about a thread about places local to you or that you frequent that "get it"

Here are some of mine (not all inclusive):

Stores:

Skelley's (Mboro)- Great little store, deli counter, ice cream counter. They have exceptionally good ribeye steaks and burger meat. The only thing I would change is having a real meat counter with a few more cuts. They did a great job expanding the parking lot and moving the snowmobile access point. Awesome staff!

Heath's Supermarket (CH)- Good produce, meats and deli. Reasonable prices and a friendly staff.

Heath's Hardware (CH)- Great selection, reasonable prices. The staff is perfect, they are there to help but not a pain. Good rental operation (even though they got rid of the tractor)

Captain Bart's Seafood (Mboro)- I only wish he were open a day a week in the winter. Always fresh- they buy daily, good prices. Don't judge this book by its cover.

Ledgewood Farm (Mboro Ctr Summers)- Great produce, very resonable, nice people.

Restaurants

Buckey's (Mboro)- Great bar- the barstaff is fantastic, the patrons laidback and friendly (full disclosure- I would be considered a regular). Great pub fare- ribs, chicken steaks, etc as well as specials. Great front of house and waitstaff. Another local place that expanded and paved their lot. New pool table room.

Village Kitchen (MBoro)- Great breakfast and lunch! I have never eaten dinner there so I can't comment. Great staff. Real good snowmobile access. Great operation from all appearances.

Pine Cone (Tuftonboro ?)- They have done a great job there- everytime I turn around they are expanding the dining area because they need to. Great lunch, friendly staff.

Services

Fashion Forward (Mboro)- Good haircut at a good price. Great people

Old Man Fire Protection (Mboro)- Great guy that knows his stuff- sprinklers.

I love the idea of this thread. I hope that people will include the town the the business is in....it will make it easier to locate and patronize.

A few of my favorites are:

Trustworthy Hardware in Lakeport - Moe has everything!

Boulia Gorrell Lumber in Laconia - Great people and the last time I checked, they still offered free delivery.

Meredith Country Store - Basic convenience store with the BEST butcher counter. You can also get a burning permit there. Wonderful people.

Garden Island Laundromat in Meredith (Jackson Star Mall) - The cleanest laundromat ever, well cared for machines and very pleasant people.

The Family Tree Restaurant - Tilton/Winnisquam, rte. 3. - This used to be called Zacks. It's under new ownership and it really is a family business. Great breakfasts, I have not been there for dinner yet. The food is very reasonably priced and home-made.

I hope that you will give these businesses a try.

Default great idea

Meredith Center Store...great meat selection. Friendly people. Gas pump out front.

Moulten Farms...a little bit of everything. Worth the trip from anywhere.

Shaketts...if you happen to be over at Newfound Lake. Freshly made donuts everyday during the summer. Weekends during late spring/early fall.
And everything else you could possibly need.

Default Good Idea

Love Market Basket in Tilton. Well run, and a very friendly staff. Cheapest prices in the Lakes Region for supermarket shopping by far.

Patrick's Pub is the best place around to grab a burger, or have a full meal in the evening.

A little out of the way......but a real 1$ store in Concord NH behind Fort Eddy Plazza. Great store.

Jordan's ice cream on 106 is my favorite stop for homemade ice cream, lol, can't wait for the good weather for them to open the place up.

I second the Joe Joe's comment.

I second the Village Kitchen. Those girls are some of the hardest working waitresses I've ever seen!!!! A must visit for breakfast in my opinion.

Giueseppe's (Mill Falls, Meredith) I love the place and the owner is ALWAYS there she's very nice.

Jordan's is great. I used to live in Gilmanton in 98/99 and would go there all the time in the summer. I need to get back over there this summer.

Default Some of my Favorites

Dive Winnipesaukee, Wolfeboro - Has a great variety of scuba equipment, other sporting goods and beachwear. Staff is very knowledgeable and friendly. Best looking gas pumping staff on the lake.

Mill Street Meat Market, Wolfeboro - Has THE BEST steak tips at a very reasonable price.

Bailey's Bubble, Wolfeboro - Best hot fudge around. Wish they had lime sherbet more often.

The Hot Dog Man, Wolfeboro Docks - Never miss him on a Sunday. Two dogs with ketchup and a Sunkist. Ahhhhhh...(Usually followed by a visit to The Bubble)

Oh yeah, almost forgot:
The Naswa Beach Bar, Paugas Bay - Best Frozen Drinks on the lake.

Spider Web Gardens, Tuftonboro -- Endless variety, quality plants, great veggies in the summer. Arguably the best garden center I've ever visited.

Additional nods to the aforementioned Dive Winnipesaukee, Captain Bart's and Melvin's own Pine Cone Cafe.

And what's the butcher shop in Wolfeboro called? Sure, you pay the price, but the meats are top-shelf and the staff very knowledgeable and friendly.

One more: Burger and fries at Wolfeboro Diner. Spring "opening" weekend would not be complete without a lunch there.

Default I have had luck with...

Pheasant Ridge golf course in Gilford. Nice people, course always in good shape and only $32 on Mondays. Ridgewood in Moultonborough is also good and they have GPS on the golf carts so when I Hook DEEEEEEP into the woods I can find my way out. Also changed marinas for wintah storage this year after fifteen years at the We Hate You Don't Bother Me Marina Inc. We went to Channel Marine. The service was great and price was about half what normally pay.

I can tell I'm going to love this thread already...........Thanks for starting it, fabulous idea!

Hardware store is, without a doubt in my mind, the one in Lakeport (I forget the name, shame on me) -- they have about everything you can think of..........

Breakfast place is Paugus Bay Diner -- even when they're busy they get it -- people are there for quick service and good food at good prices (try their Eggs Bene, my all-time breakfast -- basic, good, and what you expect for Eggs Bene!)

Marina -- Paugus Bay. Price goes up some every year, still a great deal however -- customer service is awesome, I never wait very long for the boat to hit the water, even on a busy Saturday, and can't beat the people there. Thank you Reggie, Laurie, and Kevin and the others whose names are escaping me right now!

Marine gas price -- Lakeport, hands down. No gouging there, and people are friendly.

Motel -- Barton's. Reasonable price, very clean rooms, and who wants to spend a ton on a place where you basically just sleep anyway, there's so much to do when at the Lake?????

Thanks VB, great idea!

ooops.....Sorry about the "secretary" remark.I really meant to say that they have different skills and the person who answers the phone knows plumbing lingo. Many secretaries know more about operating a business than their employer does......just a bad choice of words

What marina did you leave? Were they really that bad the whole time you were there?

PS. Channel Marine is good. It was better when Jim P. was there and much better when the Littlefield's ran it.

Default Can't kiss and tell

This thread is really about positive places so I don't want to take it down a peg by naming names. But I will share one story. After a full week of rain one of the poles holding up my canvas took early retirement and a pool took root. When I showed up at the end of the week the service manager gleefully told me she won the "office pool" they had going on when my canvas would burst. I was dismayed.

Thanks for the opportunity to share some of the places I love:

Stores

Butternuts: Kitchen products galore. No more trying to make due at the hardware store or ordering via the internet at Williams-Sonoma. Sally Hunter and Co. have an outstanding assortment of food stuffs, preparation and serving items.

Ribbon Studio: tasteful, fun and anything but pedestrian assortment of gifts and seasonal items. And the ribbons ... ooh la la!

Winni Paw Station: great assortment of high quality things canine!

Glass Knob: Center Harbour store of Vintage and antique items. Furniture, accessories and garden items. To say that our house is outfitted by the Knob would be an understatement. Don't miss the back porch filled with vintage camp memoribilia. I LOVE the 1962 Old Town canoe I bought there that now hangs in my great room! I have also bought antique sterling ice cream bowls and vintage 1940's pink etched wine glasses. All very reasonably priced. Robin is the bomb!

The General Wolfe: Tasteful assortment of furniture, home accessories and silks Every time I buy something I tell Wendy she should be charging more! Really some of her prices are ridiculous!

Restaurants:
Mise en Place Consistently outstanding and that is hard to do!

I Love Lemongrass! I have never had anything less than wonderful there. I admit the cuisine and the price aren't for everyone but boy that food is superlative!

Pine Cone Cafe Zero atmosphere but great food, reasonably priced with smiling servers and fun drink specials

NASWA fab atmosphere boat drinks and the best people watching in all of NH

Other:

Hunters IGA: Outstanding customer service and delightful people. They get the part about being in the community.

Jeff at Camp Patrol Thank you for watching out for our place while we're away. Great guy, great service!

Wow I miss the Lake... 112 days and counting

Smile nice thread!

Heath's Supermarket in Center Harbor - love it, love the people, love the produce and meats, it's a happy place to shop.

The Village Kitchen in M'Boro - best omelette around and they never roll their eyeballs at my ridiculous coffee consumption

Red Hill Dari in M'Boro - best lobster rolls plus it's a great, safe place for a teenager to work (thanks Bob)

The Old Country Store in M'Boro - whenever I need a last minute gift or odd kitchen tool, they never fail to have it. Plus they have great jams and jellies and I could wander around in there seemingly forever. Whenever I have family in town, it's the first place they want to go.

Innisfree Bookstore in Meredith - Another great place for last minute gifts, I always love whatever music they're playing, and they're great about ordering something if they don't have it. I love how they have lots of NH books.

The Mug in Center Harbor - the dynoburger. Need I say more?

Red Hill Auto in M'Boro - their gas prices are always competitive, they bend over backwards to schedule appts, twice they've fixed something on my car without notice and without charge, they are good people.

Imaginations in M'Boro - if you need someone to watch your kid, you can't do better than Imaginations. Some of the teachers have been there since my teenager was an infant, and now that Elizabeth Morin owns the place, it's better than ever. She's awesome.

Canoe in Center Harbor - best calamari and flash fried oysters ever.

Giusseppe's in Meredith - Julie has such excellent white pizza and they are great about ordering/timing/packing up a to-go order for the times when you take the kids out and feel guilty that your husband didn't get to come.

Lyon's Den - I wish they were closer, they have such wonderful food. I need to plan a dinner out there soon.

Here are our favorites:

Lyon's Den - Bar or dining room, both are great. Best food and service on or near the lake. Reservations honored!

Mame's - Very enjoyable. Reservations honored!

Michael's at the Weirs - This will be the "hottest" place to gather/dine near the Weir's this summer!

Patrick's - Great place for a beer and a good meal.

Kellerhaus - Best hand made chocolate this side of Germany, plus other candies, ice cream and gifts.

"Lili's" on Weir's Blvd.- great ice cream by boat or by car. Great views as well.

Wine'ng Butcher - Chicken and steak tips like no other place on the planet.

Bean's 'n Greens - Great vegies to go with the chicken and tips mentioned above.

Lakeport Landing - Boat gas at reasonable prices, with great dock assistants.

Mt. Washington Cruises - Big boat or the smaller boats, always a great time!

Friday Night Fireworks at the Weirs (in the summer) - No better way to start the weekend off with a bang!

Places and things that are being missed:

Waldo-Pepper's Weirs Bvld. location.

Surf Coaster

Belnap County ski season ticket discount at Gunstock

Ability to drive through Meredith in less than 30 minutes during summer weekends.

January thaws, to keep the snow and ice dams off the roofs

Default Owls Nest / Wise Owl

Let's not forget about the "Owls Nest" store and restaurant! Great place to dock and get a quick and good breakfast or lunch as well as pickup the supplies you need for the day on the boat. Really nice people there and great of them to keep the docks open and in relatively good shape for us boaters!!

Thumbs up Big Cat Coffees

A friend sent me to www.bigcatcoffees.com for my Keurig Cups.

They are a "webstore" that happens to be located in Tilton/Northfield on Rt. 140.

Nice people and great prices. You can order online and pick up at their warehouse.

and NO, I'm not a principle, just a customer.

Default Hood cleaning service

This will bore everyone except restaurant owners........Restaurants are required to have their hood systems professionally cleaned twice annually and it's a problem from hell. Most cleaning companies just send in a couple of unskilled kids with a power washer and they usually trash the kitchen. One time the kids walked over the metal ridge cap while cleaning the outside exausts and and dented it so bad it caused the roof to leak. They have shorted out the fan system, flooded the hood lights and stained the floor with chemicals.
But,all is not lost....we've finally found a guy who did a great job for us.The hoods were sparkling and the kitchen was immaculate when he was done.......and about 20% cheaper than the competition.
