We can all say that about everything we do. I work in a large industry here in Mass. Can myself and others be "job shopped" out when you figure the cost of insurance and everything else? Sure - but where would that leave most of us?

It's actually quite simple, either you make money or you go under. If you operate at a loss, you can't stay in business. You can't ignore those costs. The author makes the erroneous assumption that the labor to cook, shell, add other ingredients and prepare that lobster are free.

Where does it leave most of us??? Screwed. It seems a majority of us are for higher taxes on the people who produce this stuff, endless regulation, government bailouts, raising energy costs to make "green" energy more appealing (doesn't work), print money to buoy the stock market so the reality of how bad this economy does not tank the stock market again.... all this comes out of the consumer's pocketbook and is reflected in what we pay for stuff. Add to that the need for most businesses in this area to make most of their money in the summer months to survive for the year and it adds up to the cost we see for a lobster roll.

From Winni, you can easily drive to the boat, pay the wholesale price for lobster, cook it, shell it and prep it, but even with the free labor you provide, it would still probably cost much more than the most expensive lobster roll in the area when you figure all your costs......

Lobsters are very cheap right off the boats this year,it's true but after they go to the processing houses,distributors and wholesalers,most restaurants are paying at least $18 lb for lobster meat.
At the VK and Red Hill Dari,we sell 1/4 roll with fries for $13.95.
I must agree that they do taste good when you make them at home.

So on that note, who in the Lakes region sells the best roll at a reasonable price?

I would say by far that the best I've had was at north country deli in Laconia by Opeeche park.

We always thought that Sam and Rosie's had the very best lobster roll. There may be a few others that match their rolls. The lobster roll at Castle in the Clouds is very good and the lunches on the terrace are great with the wonderful views of the lake.

Akwa Marina Bar and Grill serves a darn good lobster roll in my opinion!!

They're very good, the fries are delicious and the signature Mai Tai is fabulous. The sailboat bar is a lovely place from which to watch the sun set. Great place for lobster-roll-date-night.

Red Hill Dari has a great lobster roll as well, served with delicious fries. Different atmosphere than the bar at Akwa Marina.

I also had a great lobster roll from the Lakeside Deli. Had it to go and enjoyed it as part of a tailgate meal prior to a concert at Meadowbrook.

JoJo's does a great job with lobster rolls; no fries. ; )

ITD - You don't get what I'm saying or at least that's just my opinion. I'm talking about my industry not a "little" ma and pop business. Where I work we can "job shop" engineers and save on insurance, fire all the maintenance folks and have an outside night crew come in. While I'm at it why not fire the food staff and call in and outside restaurant to feed us? Oh our timekeeper, who needs her?? Lay her off and give it to an outside "check processing" company. Where does it end? Next time you need help after hours with your computer, TV, washing machine or even your lawn mower and you call the "800" number only to get someone in India maybe just maybe you'll remember me.

Dpg, you and I are having a situation of "failure to communicate"..... the author of that article makes a jump from wholesale, whole lobster cost directly to lobster roll price without including any of the intermediate step's costs. I have a problem with that, you will lose money if you price a product like that and go out of business. That's the point I was trying to make.

I'm not a fan of outsourcing, especially to far away countries, not sure where you got the impression I was.........

By far the best lobster roll ever. All for $16..No mayonnaise or filler just chock full of clump lobster meat. THIS is how I personally judge lobster rolls..WOW!!

The perfectly toasted roll was underneath all the lobster meat. We waited 1/2 hour in line to purchase, and being a real lobster lover, rest assured it was well worth the wait.

1/2 hour wait can turn into 2 hours according to their website. So be warned, it could be longer if you decide to take a daytrip there. It certainly looks delicious.

You can't mention Red's without mentioning what they do to the traffic trying to get through Wiscasset. It's great that Red's is so popular but not so good for the thousands of people who have to get through there on summer weekends. The traffic backs up for miles in both directions on Rt. 1, mostly because of Red's. I hear that Red's lobster rolls are awesome but after crawling through miles of traffic we can't wait to get away from Wiscasset and have never considered stopping there.

They were detested so much that the prisoners referred to them as "mudbugs".. How times have changed!

Red's has always been the measuring stick of lobster rolls for me. Always stop and get one when driving through the self proclaimed "the prettiest village in Maine".

I have always wanted to stop at Reds on my way to or from Sedgewick, ME but the lines were always too long for me to want to stop. Now that I have heard about and seen the Lobsta Rolls I will make time when I going by that way in the summer months.

Stopped at Reds yesterday on my way home from camp. Lobster roll is very good. Impressive amount of fresh lobster meat. The ladies that were working non stop still had a great attitude and did a great job. It is my understanding they are all family. Wich is nice to see. The town is considering having Reds move because of traffic backing up. My only critique would be that the line moves very slow. But it was worth the wait.

On a side note....If you do make the trip up to Reds drive a little further north into Windsor and stop at Husseys general sfore. Their sign out front advirtizes that they have wedding gowns, shotguns and cold beer.The place has everything.

They close for the season on Columbus Day which is October 14th this year ... crowds get better ... less leaf peepers than summer tourist ...

Sounds like Faddens general store in North Woodstock NH. The sign in the window said "if we aint got it, you don't need it".

Agree! We have several lovely pieces of woodwork in our home from the store, including loon carving.

NH State Prison has a store as well. Their furniture are award winning.
Across the street from the prison on old Rte 3 North of Concord.

Since the thread is now talking about lobsta rolls that are not particularlyi close to the lake, if you are in Southern NH get over to Tuckaway Tavern in Raymond, just off the exit of Route 101.

On Mondays and Tuesdays they have a two for one special of their lobster rolls. Two different sizes available and in two different styles (cold with mayo or warm with melted butter).

I found they were sweet and perfectly cooked!

I've also heard Viasta in Laconia has outstanding lobster rolls at excellent prices. My daughter and her friend go there to get subs and say it's the best and cheapest place for subs around.
