USN '90 to '94, based out of sunny San Diego CA. 4 years in, finished out as an ABH2(AW). Flight deck crew aboard an aircraft carrier. By far the coolest job ever. What a rush it was however after two very long deployments for two different conflicts, crappy pay, long hours and Clinton as a "boss"... yeah I was all set with that and punched out.

Great experience I'll never regret, chilling and sobering to be 18 years old and in a war zone. There is NOTHING quite like coming back to the USA after seeing how uncivilized and violent the rest of the world can be.

.....regretfully, no military service probably because I was eighteen years old and I hit a #303 out of 365 in the Viet Nam draft lottery back on April 1, 1970, and everyone higher than a 180 was supposedly not to be drafted ..... hut-hut-hut ..... and something like 56,000 American G.I.'s and 2,000,000 Vietnamese got killed in the Viet Nam War between 1966-1974.

I can remember walking over to the Guild's Drug at the corner of Fairfield and Newbury, where deLuca's is now, and buying a Herald to check for my draft lottery number, and what a relief, feeling like I won it big with a #303 ..... no worries man!

.....otherwise you just know I really really wanted to join the Marines as a pvt so's I could be the point man......way out-front... on the rat patrol ...... crawling through the hot, wet, bamboo jungle just south of the dmz... creeping and crawling through the jungle with an ar-15 cradled across my arms and a big 16" bowie knife clinched between my teeth .....
aaaarrrrrrrgggggghh!!! ...... just waiting on the next black pajama charlie out in the jungle there to show ....... but no way Jose ..... was not to be .... now that I hit it big with a #303.

You know that the boxer, Muhammad Ali .....'the mouth from the south' .... www.youtube.com/watch?v=HeFMyrWlZ68 ....lost his championship title, and went to prison for three years or so starting in '67 because he refused to get drafted into the Army .... or something.... about the same time.... it was big news ... and today Viet Nam has dedicated a statue for him.

In 1970 my dad was a 55-year old lieutenant commander with 2 1/2 stripes- USNR, having served from '42-'45 active, and in the reserves from '46-'74, and if he he told me once, he told me a hundred times to stay out of the military. He died in 2010, at age 95, and now has a dark blue 'U S Navy' baseball cap resting on top of his dead body chest, inside the coffin, because he really liked the Navy.

There's nothing quite as sobering as to read the sign, "Achtung—Minen" from your car.

Probably not very good at making polls. In fact I just figured out the basics when STEVO made the request. As written, the poll only lets you post once. I gave a generic option of "Yes" for those who may prefer not to mention their branch. So it's the total of all the yes and all the branches. Sorry for any confusion.

I was in the US Navy Seabees from 1968 to 1972. I had a tour in Vietnam and was rewarded with a year in GITMO. I was pre-lottery but knew what I had to do.

Each time I think of my time or write of my time I always have a tear in my eye for the 19 friends that I lost on a very bad day for our unit. It was the day we lost the bird Rivet Amber, call sign Irene 92, with all crew on board. 5-June-1969. Six of those nineteen I worked with directly. They are the six sergeants shown in the second crew photo at the page I linked to.

I was an Air Traffic Controller working in the Control Tower at Eielson, and remember well the 6th SW, and the 55th SRW. From our perch 108 ft above the tarmac, we spent a lot of time watching the RC135's and the KC135's parked on the flight line.

I remember well the loss of Rivet Amber, and the massive search for the crash site. It was definitely a very sad day for the Eielson AFB family, as all the units on the base were tenant units except the Alaskan Air Command units, and we all worked together to get the mission accomplished.

Got to look out from the radio van and see the Russian missiles pointed right at us. Life expectancy should the fan get hit was just under 6 seconds. Operated and repaired AN/TRC 24 tube type radios sending and receiving voice com, and computer ADL = Automatic Data Link, to control our missiles using Line Of Sight Antennas. Also was licensed to drive passenger bus, 5 Ton, 2 1/2 Ton, 3/4 Ton and the M151 Army Jeep that had independent suspension and would flip on a dime.
