Default Signs of true Spring

While it will probably be another week or two before it happens in the Lakes Region, as far as I'm concerned, it is now officially Spring!

Driving in my road last night (north central MA), I heard that wonderful sound again, first time since last year... PEEPERS! I love that sound! http://www.learner.org/jnorth/sounds...angElliott.mp3

Funny you should mention it ! I've been working the "night shift" and end up going home at o-dark :30 in the AM. Walking to the car on the way out of work this week I noticed they were peeping away. Do they eat black flies ?

Default No see-ems or black flies?

I was out raking at lunch time today, and something was nipping at my neck. A bit early for the black flies?? - or are they early this year?

Haven't heard the peepers but did hear a very strong "Phoebe" bird call today. The sign of true spring for me is always to see the lights go on at Jojo's on the Moultonborough Neck Road, supplies being delivered, and the sign out front saying "Opening Soon". Today the sign read "Opening Friday, April 14th!" Yay - great meats, great subs, and great owners, Russ and Barb!

Default Absolutely

While out walking last weekend on Lakewood Ave in Alton Bay, in what amounts to a large puddle off the side of the road were a bunch of frogs. I could never get close enough to photo them (when I did, they shut up ), but here is a 10 sec audio clip.

Default Did I hear right?

I think two were saying Bud and Wiser.

I found a mother and several baby rabbits under an evergreen in my yard. I hope the neigborhood cats don't find them and I cannot afford to guard them 24/7.

They have been there serveral days but so far no Easter eggs.

Here are a few sure signs of spring which I've recently witnessed ...

The sound "fzzzzbzzzzzz" of the Phoebe's looking for food in the birdfeeder out front.

The sight of aforementioned birdfeeder laying on it's side in the front yard - evidence that our resident bear has emerged from hibernation and is very hungry!

The yipping of young coyote's, and howling of their parents each night when I take the dachshund out for his late-night relief.

The fat green shoots of iris and daylily standing proudly in my perennial bed, alongside puffy mounds of new, green columbine leaves.

The swooping flight of the goldfinches all over my back yard!

And last but not least, the lone red-winged blackbird perched on a dried weed stem at the edge of Lily Pond.

The temperatures might not say it's spring right now, but the rest of nature sure does!!!

Default Now it's really spring!

I am now ready to think that spring has finally and officially arrived. Our resident loon has returned. He (?) popped up not more than twenty feet from shore while I was looking out over the lake. I always look forward to the return of the loons to the lake. It's now time to uncover the boats and get to work!

"The loons Norman, the loons." Anywho, the Weirs loon crew was back last week, boy I miss them during the cold months.

After a long day of boating on a hot day, as evening came sitting out on the deck at the camp with a cooling breeze high up above Paugus Bay, there was nothing so wonderful than to hear the loons calling each other, nesting near by.

I can't Wait!!!!
Love,
T.

Default Peepers

[Driving in my road last night (north central MA), I heard that wonderful sound again, first time since last year... PEEPERS! I love that sound!

I love it too!!!! the peepers have been "peeping" for a couple of weeks here already in northern Ct. on my little lake.
But I need my New Hampshire fix, and will be up there in a week or so to share some of Springs beauty with you all.
Thanks to all who have posted the gorgeous photos from around the lake.......I really have enjoyed them. Any recent ones of Meredith?
