What is the name of the boat in the next to last picture? It looks like 100 passengers and single lifeboat, capacity 10. On the other hand, it appears the Mount has no lifeboat in the last picture.

The people in the photos look like a movie cast, wearing fine clothing and hats.

It appears that a lifeboat is located at the starboard stern of the Mount.

Note the horsedrawn delivery sled in the first photo.

With respect to the Hobb's Landing post card - "What happens under the umbrella stays under the umbrella".

This was the North Main Street Bus. The kids who lived above Forest Road rode free and those who lived below paid. It was Alvin Hatch's bus. He had a jewelry business in the midwest but moved to Wolfeboro after marrying his wife "The Goose " of Goose Corner. In Wolfeboro he became a "gentleman farmer".

I have seen this picture before. If the whole picture was in view you would see Mr. Hatch to the left with his dog Chief. I love the history of the town. In this particular instance I had personal knowledge of the family so I know a little more about them. Mrs. Hatch was quite a character. She wrote a little book called Goose Quills. She wrote for the Granite State News too. Obviously she didn't believe a woman's place was in the home even in those days. Unfortunately they didn't have any kids.

Was the Brook and Bridle inn located in Wolfeboro or on Roberts Cove Rd in Alton? As I recall Bonnie Dunbar's place of that name was in Alton.

Yes,East Alton near Roberts cove. Now owned by Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro.

He told me it was, but couldn’t confirm myself .heres another from 1916 ,the man on left with hat started one of the first resorts .
Titled a Two hour catch on the original photo.

That photo is interesting .it shows old fire prevention techniques. The beams on the ceiling are chamfered or rounded to prevent flames from catching the edges of the beams. Learned that from the man who gave Me the photos and shad several fires at his resort.

Why is it that today, immediate downtown on-street parking on North Main Street is parallel and on South Main Street it's diagonal? I'm pretty sure that during the 1950's, it was all parallel.

Interesting question. But I think it used to be mostly all diagonal. Now it's mixed. Who knows why?????

For the benefit of the younger Forum members: Yes, we did used to have several pharmacies on Main Street (as seen in the photo).

Also, note the original location of Bradley's Hardware prior to relocating to its current location at 22 Railroad Avenue.

Now does anyone remember what used to be in the 22 Railroad Ave building before Bradley's moved there? I believe it used to be some kind of meat processing facility. Am I correct?

Of course I do. Before he died he had a little stand like Hot Dog Bob. His was by Spencer Hughes Realty-now called Verani I think.

Sorry, I didn't open the obituary. It said that. I can barely remember the Locker Plant so I don't remember him working there but I do remember going there with my mom and dad.

What is now the Town Hall was donated to Wolfeboro by John Brewster.

Built in 1888, you've got to stand on the sidewalk and take it all in. It's impressive and much grander than it looks from a drive-by.

"North" Main Street takes a traveler west out of town. This view must be miles away--perhaps photographed from Winter Harbor?

Maybe the area now occupied by "Robin Acres"?

Anyone recognize any of those barns as landmarks?

APS, I don't think it's out as far as Robin Acres. I think the upper part of the picture could be the top of North Main St. hill. Remember there were no trees then, all fields so it might look further than it is? I wish the building were a little clearer though. I think the houses along the lake are Sewall Road.

These great old pictures create a beautiful scene of a life that will never again exist around here. The few that have memories, and experiences, they can connect to the photos are fortunate, just as we are fortunate to hear their extended thoughts.

I know this suggestion is out of the realm of the Lakes Region- but if you know ANYTHING about NYC, you owe it to yourself to read the 1970 novel (illustrated novel- and still in print!)- Time and Again, by Jack Finney.

I read this book once a year, every year, for 20 years after first receiving it from a friend. It's a peaceful respite from the pace of today's life in a beautifully written hand.

You have time- sit back, relax and get lost in this fabulous story!

"Point Maryland" seems to only exist on this post card. 'Never seen it on a map, or heard any mention of it.

'Good picture of Wolfeboro's "Dockside". I have an early photo taken by my family there, but there was no covered waiting area in the picture. The parked cars "speak" of the early-through-late 1940s, so this was a post-war photograph.

Beyond Rust Pond is Copple Crown Mountain, also rendered as one word--"Copplecrown".
Abandoned "Moose Mountain Ski Slope" was located there, not to be confused with Moose Mountain near Vermont.

Brewster had a nice open campus, but most has been built up. Their endowment must be impressive. Brewster's "message" has certainly morphed since I attended.

The new (and huge) "Pinckney Boathouse" ($600,000 in 1988) really stuck out along the shoreline! NH 's architects were impressed.

Who was Pinckney, you ask? IDK...

I never heard of Point Maryland either. Hmmm. Pinckney I believe was somebody who donated the bulk of the money to build the boathouse-from one of the more recent attendees-not back in the older days.

The Lakeview Farm Restaurant was where O's is now and the Inn on Main. It was just above the main building.

I would've said 1920s, back when cars had wood-spoked wheels; however, I found this at Wikipedia:

"The U.S. state of New Hampshire first required its residents to register their motor vehicles and display license plates in 1905".

I thought the building at the right had been constructed to house Wolfeboro First National Bank. 'Guess not... Now I wish I'd kept my savings passbook as a souvenir.

It still ran across Main Street in 1914 but I couldn't find an exact date when the tracks were ripped up.

My guess is the tracks are likely embedded / flush with the street vs. the raised bed and/or formal crossings we think of today. Another example:

This is an interesting photo posted by Stilljester. Does anyone have an idea of an approximate year this photo was taken? McDude says the railroad tracks crossing Main Street were removed in 1914 so we do know it's prior to 1914.

I did enlarge it and made a few mental notes; The Town does have telephone (electric) poles, there are no gasoline vehicles visible on the street (all horse drawn vehicles), and it appears to be a reduced sized steam powered railroad engine actively crossing Main Street.

Where was this place? With my bad eyes this appears to be overlooking Alton Bay but is titled Wolfeboro anyone know? Looks like Rattlesnake Island in the distance above the single car in the back ground.

I am wondering if it could be the cabins on old 28-you can see them from the "new" 28 on the left heading toward Wolfeboro. Are they called "Hilltop" now? Can't remember the name but Bob Gavill owns them and he is the nicest guy you could ever meet. It just kind of looks like that area to me but I could be all wrong. Just guessing.

That fits the place I described. It would be old 28 out of Wolfeboro. If you went by Robert's Cove almost to the end of that road before you hit the new 28 that would be the location. It really looks like the area.

Libby Museum ought to be on everybody's "to do" list. It is open to the public, and there is an opportunity to voluntarily donate toward the upkeep. There is an organization, "Friends of he Libby Museum", incorporated as a non-profit, which provides structure to the Museum.

Within the Museum,a visitor will find all kinds of natural history exhibits, animals, artifacts, diorama-type displays, written material. During the summer they sponsor educational programs with speakers and traveling exhibits.

It is on Route 109 in Wolfeboro, just south of the Tuftonboro line. It is accessible by boat, although the docking is extremely limited.

There is something for all ages. I have been going there at least once a summer for over 50 years.

If you look carefully at one of the photos, you can see the Gulf Gas Station was originally located at the Ford Dealership prior to moving across the street to where the Yum Yum Shop is today.

Many nice pix, and it's hard to dissect them all. My recollection is that, back in the day, gas stations had disticntive architecture. Among other features, Esso had a red lipstick roof feature. I always thought of the Yum Yum shop as being a former Esso/Exxon station. To me Gulf had their orange signs but nothing distinctive about architecture. YumYum = Esso, n'est ce pas?

I remember the Esso station quite well. It was located on the hill across from the A&P (which is now Hunters Supermarket). This was made into a nice little park once the station closed.

This old fashioned Esso gas station was rather unique as it did not have a car lift; rather it had a deep cement trench that the mechanic had to step down into in order to work under the vehicles. It was a very small Gas Station.

McDude is correct in that the Gulf Station was located at the current Yum Yum Shop, but prior to that it was located at the Ford Dealership across the street.

I was a mechanic at the chevy dealer in wolfboro many years ago and we had those pits. Made certain jobs easy but really was dangerous aside from the fumes there was the issue of falling in or driving a car over the edge. At the time it was called Kamler Chevrolt and Buick and was located sort of behind Hunters grocery. (was it called that then, 40+ years ago?)

The A&P was in front of Kamler which before that was Hart's garage. The Rite Aid went in there and is now Walgreen's.
