Default Ice Report 1-23-10

We pulled the bob house this weekend from in front of the Glendale town docks to a few hundred yards off shore near my camp on Welch Island. We were using a Polaris Ranger with tracks so we had some pretty good weight. We dug a few holes as we went to check the ice and had a solid 9" all the way out. If your venturing out near Welch you do need to be careful of the ice reef that has formed about 75 yards off shore that pretty much goes up the entire West side of the island. We found a safe place to cross and had no isuues but there were some areas of the reef that were not safe to cross so be careful.

We then snowmobiled all the way to Alton Bay staying on the south side of Diamond and Sleepers island near the mouth of West Alton Marina and had no issues. Lots of snowmobiles and atv's had already made tracks and we stopped along the way to ask fishermen about the ice thickness. I definitely would not venture on the North side of Rattlesnake or anywhere in the middle of the broads just yet though we did see some people out there...

Be safe;

Dan
