Default Swim Rafts

Everything gets worse as we get older, I know that already, BUT -

We're in the market for a new swim raft. When I was a kid, these were great big things, made of heavy wood and floated with styrofoam. 20 kids could jump up and down all day and not flip the thing.

My most recent one was a piece of crap. Small, light, some kind of redwood-like deck with black plastic floats. The flimsy metal ladder kept coming off. Three kids could flip it if they worked at it.

As I look around, most new ones are like the latter, rather than the former. Is this an accurate impression? Why is it difficult to find a good one? Have they been banned by tree-huggers, or is there another explanation?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
