My future husband was in the 1971 Vietnam draft. His number was 33 and we knew that he would eventually be drafted. We were nervous and confused and we weren’t sure what we should do. He was in college at that time and I think the college deferment had ended. He was sent a letter telling him to get ready to be drafted or if he signed something that day and sent it back, he would be skipped over. And that’s what happened. Scary times for sure!
