Well I love winter sports too. Skiing many weekends and the occasional sled ride. But I'll admit that by mid-March, I'm usually ready to watch for the ice-out countdown.

Looks 10 days of good ice making. Then lets hope for a foot or two of snow.

I have to share this with all of you. I can not believe how timely this is in light of the discussion regarding ice safety. One of my former students that graduated a few years back from my TV Broadcasting program at the High School I teach at is now reporting for a western MA Television station. His first ever live report was on none other than "Ice-Safety." Back when he was a student of mine I saw something in him that lead me to believe he would eventually end up doing great things. Now here he is only 22 years old and hopefully on his way! I have to say I am very proud of him!!!
![]() Oh yeah and the info is timely and related to this thread too: http://www.wggb.com/global/video/fla...=&rnd=71691392 If that link doesn’t work try this one: http://www.wggb.com/Global/story.asp?S=11796073 |

That must be pretty cool to see one of your students broadcasting. You must be very proud and rightly so! Congrats. It was a great newscast with good points. One that I find to be most important......never go out on the ice alone.
Thanks for sharing... ![]() eillac@dow |

I was looking for some information about an "Official Ice-In" date. It looks like people agree on January 11th.
Sounds good to me! |

Hi All,
Talked to an ice fisherman today at Rattlesnake Island Landing. He reported 6" but he was only 100 yards from shore. He did not think walking out further was smart right now. Give it more time....It's making ice every night. Soon. ![]()

If you have Rattlesnake Island property, you'll have access to the landing.

Rattlesnake Island owners have property on the mainland from which they can launch boats.

Someone told me that the average is Jan. 21st. So, this is earlier than normal. Although, I can remember walking out onto Wolfeboro Bay to watch the New Years fireworks before. So, that must have been really early.

Wolfeboro Bay along with most other bays are almost always safely frozen by New Years. It's the rest of the open areas of the lake that average a late January ice-in.

I agree with Wolfeboro Bay often being frozen in by New Years. We use to
try to ice skate every New Years.

The # One concern is to keep all safe out on the ice... Some forget about the inherent dangers to and go out there in the first place.
A point of interest is that most of us survivors into "The Oldies Club" ( if you will ) took the advise of our predecessors... Now, in doing so, us retirees get 10 more Brain Cramps Per Month! ![]() ![]() A great video for ice safety can be seen here; http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/safety/ice/index.html

Three trucks park side by side on 7" of ice, when the ice started to crack two made it off and one sank, just the plow showing.

Just off the beach there are bob houses, not sure how much ice they are on but less than a mile down the island the broads are still open. The wind keeps breaking up the ice, won't be putting the bob house until it catches.

My brother just reported to me with 6-8" of solid black (clear) ice. He was about halfway between the Weirs and Meredith about 50-100' from shore. Thats more than I was thinking there would be that far out in the bay.
