Just looking for a little inside info about the town and what the living is like there.
We have been concentration our retirement home search primarily in the Alton/Wolfeboro area as we are a familiar with it. Realtor has sent a couple of listings in Meredith that just might fit the bill for what we are looking for. Just digging in the dirt looking for info and opinions. Thanks...all comments appreciated. ![]()

I live in Moultonboro and work in Meredith... taxes are higher in Meredith/Laconia, and there are more restaurants/shops in Meredith. It all depends on what you want/need.

Think about your affinity to seacoast. Wolfeboro is much closer than Meredith, but if you are more likely to go to Plymouth a lot, then Meredith is better. Both are very nice towns.

Moultonborough has reasonable taxes and lots of water! It has a border with Meredith as you know. I do not know of a glass place but ask in the Meredith shops.
Hard to know what someone else likes so think where you would feel at home. Be careful of buying because it is what you know. I wanted to be in an area that I rented and loved. I listened to a real estate agent and bought in a different section that I now love. In the section that I thought was perfect, the water has turned to poorer quality and the views were never good. The houses are run down. I am so happy that I did not end up there. I hope you listen to your heart and your head and find something you love as much as I love it here!! I am sure that there must be a VFW in a nearby town like Laconia etc. Do a search and see where you would find one. Last edited by Lucky1; 06-24-2010 at 06:48 PM. I think Meredith is a very quaint town, a picture post-card setting ! But very little to do or go, outside of downtown/dock area.
IMO, Gilford has it all ! Location, location, location!!!! Access to I-93, and located in the middle of the Lake. Makes boating destinations great, cause you can go in any direction! The Broads are close by, if that's what you like. Convient to Laconia too. Every retail store you could really want to shop, Grocery, Wal-Mart, Lowes, Major Pharmacies, Fast-Food, Fine DIning, Marinas, and boat yards galore, Gunstock ski are, and let's not forget the NH State Liquor Store ! ![]() The list goes on, and on... Taxes are not overbearing IMO, and you get a lot of bang for your tax buck ! Town beach, town parks, town boat ramp (next to Marine Patrol in Glendale), town water and sewer in some locations. No major town projects on the horizon (that I know of?), which would affect taxes..... Can you tell I'm a Gilford tax payer ? Loving it here ! ![]() BD Last edited by bigdog; 06-26-2010 at 09:49 AM. I love living in Meredith. The scenery is really amazing. I'm probably not the only who has stopped a few times a year by the bay and thought the scene looked like a Norman Rockwell painting. (Especially looking at Mill Falls after a fresh snow with the white light strung on the trees.) The traffic in summer can be a hassle, without a doubt, but we can't be so selfish as to imagine keeping this to ourselves!
Now that I'm thinking of pro's and con's - I think summer traffic is my only "con"! No wonder I love it here! Pro's - beautiful setting, accessible attractions, lots of activities nearby (boating, golfing, fishing, skiing), central location (for traveling further to Conway, Vermont, Maine, etc,), plenty of local services and shopping outlets (great restaurants, grocery, pharmacy, liquor, medical), a fantastic community center includes lot of activities, Greater Meredith Program festivities and events through the year, Chowderfest in October, Main street and the Mill Marketplace shops (I love spending a leisurely day there). Last but not least? Watching tourists scramble to 'only' visit our beautiful region, while WE "get" to LIVE here! ![]() |

Does anyone know the difference in the tax rate for Meredith vrs Moultonborough as the Wonderful Bay area is a mere ten minutes from me so not far to go. I shop at Hanafords and go often to exit 20 so there is much that is convenient. There are many retired folks here and I have the feeling that housing and taxes are a bit more reasonable in Moultonborough than in Meredith and you can have both towns for doing things. Am I wrong about the housing and property taxes?

Although I prefer Moultonborough to Meredith, I have another reason for posting this message.
I want to thank all of you for spelling MEREDITH correctly! ![]() |

...it's very quaint and very pretty. There are a lot of good dining options, a good book store, a couple good ice cream spots, and sitting outside at Lago, enjoying the view over Meredith Bay and Gunstock is my favorite spot on the lake.
The traffic can be brutal but there are a few short cuts around it and it's the price you pay for living in such a tourist-friendly town. The new Hannaford's is decent and there's also a movie theater. Gunstock is close if you like to ski. And the Fishing Derby in February on Meredith Bay is a lot of fun. My place is on Bear Island so it's a little different than living in town but I go into "town" every chance I get. Oh ya...can't forget the Wi'ing Butcher, an amazing specialty food store located behind the Mobil on Rt. 25. I had my first kiss in Meredith, got married in Meredith (not to the same girl I kissed ![]() So maybe I'm a little biased, but I'd say Meredith has it all.

http://www.nh.gov/nhes/elmi/communpro.htm Use the "full value" rates which have been "equalized". Look at either each town's profile or the county profile. |

If you're in Meredith on Sunday, don't miss the 19the Annual Rubber Ducky Race, put on by the Lions Club. The Duckies are on sale until 3:30pm ($5 of 5 for $20, if I recall), and they race down the Falls toward the lake. The winner gets cash prizes, and runners-up get other great prizes! The Lions also have a barbecue going on, and usually the boy scouts are there with popcorn, hot dogs, ballons, etc.
Also, the fireworks are Sunday night at dusk! Great show, by land or by lake! |

I'm just the opposite of Donnamatrix.......Live in Meredith and work in Moultonborough.Equally beautiful small towns but give the edge to Meredith because it is so close to everything. 10 minutes to Laconia,I 93,Gilford shopping and just 1'2 hour or so to Concord.True,Moultonborough has the edge on taxes but being a donor town, they'll be catching up.
