Cheap Skate $3.00-PSU Wednesdays

Welcome to this forum Ken. It's always good to get real people on-board as opposed to us knuckleheads hiding behind a made up alias name. With nothing better to do, I made it down to the PSU rink tonight for the three dollar Cheap Skate. As Joy Bayhar recently said on her CNN tv show: "Wait a minute! What type of an adult male guy goes ice skating by himself at night? Definately, must be a loser guy!"

The rink is real attractive inside and should be a good rink venue for hockey games, and I sure hope they sell beer at the games!

A couple friendly requests here, as long as I have your attention. It looks like the new PSU rink doesn't have any of those trainer supports made with four legs and a cross bar, upon which the user rests with their arms for support, while learning to skate. At the Waterville rink, they have about four small child, and four full size adult trainer supports and they all get a lot of use.

It looks like the new PSU rink has been using four sets of two plastic milk crates held together by plastic wire ties to make make-shift trainer supports for the small children, with no trainer supports available for the full size adults.

Is there any chance you could get the full size trainer supports like what they have at the Waterville rink for grown-ups who want to give ice skating a try?

Anyone looking to buy ice skates for less? The Etcetera Shoppe in Meredith has a big supply of 'like new' skates for sale on consignment. There's a big inventory of slightly used skates up on the second floor and getting skates that fit correct is about 3/4 of the battle in learning to ice skate.

About fifty skaters turned out for tonight's 6-8 pm, three dollar Cheap Skate with it split pretty even at 25 children and 25 adults, with what looked like about zero PSU students on the ice.

I have no idea how much one of those 3' x 6' advertising panels on the ice arena boards, facing the ice, costs for advertising a business, and there's about 45 ad panels sold, with about 15 vacant spots left and looking for advertisers. The businesses include a number of medical professionals, a number of financial institutions, the electric utility, some local businesses, and some nationals like Coke and McDonald's. Attention to any businesses such as Plymouth Wal-Mart, Rhymes Oil & Propane, Dead River Oil & Propane, Meredith Ford, Dunkin Donuts, Cumberland Farm, Fair Point Communication, Verizon Wireless, or Hannaford's looking to get on the PSU Ice Arena boards......you better hurry up because 75% of the spaces are already sold out!

Apparently as planned, the PSU rink has become the new home for the PSU Panthers, and the Waterville Valley rink is now closed from September 8 to sometime close to thanksgiving, when it reopens for the winter ski season. In the past, for the last 20 years or so, the WV rink sported the 20' wide PSU Panther at center ice, and now the PSU center ice in the Plymouth area is home to the PSU Panther. Waterville Valley and Plymouth are about 20-miles apart, and a 30-minute drive.

These are just guess-timates on my part, but the WV ice arena, which is owned by the Town of Waterville Valley, cost something like 5-million dollars all told, over time, and the new PSU rink cost something like 15-million dollars.

In the summer time, the WV rink gets used by hockey camps from new england states, and a semi-pro hockey team from New Brunswick, Canada, www.saintjohnseadogs.com, but for now there's no demand for the WV ice, so the rink is closed. In the past it would have been home ice to the PSU team for practices, games, and add-on various hockey, figure skating, broomball and general circle-skating use.

It's all got me scratching my head wondering that maybe some type of manufactoring icy food or ice cream maker could be set up in the rink? Maybe a good place to make eskimo pie, ice cream bars? Like, what to do with a large icy cold building that's empty and unused, similar to a walk-in freezer, with a professional hockey sized, perfectly smooth ice surface, a relatively very new Zamboni ice resurfacer vehicle, lighting, dressing rooms, new boards, heat, air conditioning, sound and score board, situated on a pond in a beautifull mountain setting other than just closing it up?

Hellooooooo, there's nobody home at the WV rink and the doors are locked and the lights are all turned off?

And, getting back to the PSU Wednesday 6-8pm, three dollar Cheap Skate at the brand new PSU rink; that's a steal of a deal in a super-duper new rink complete with sound, a light show, and ice skate rentals for an extra four dollars.

Or, check out the Plymouth Ski & Sports on nearby Main St, Plymouth which has a very in-depth and thorough inventory of new skates for sale. If you were never really happy with your old skates, then definately check out the new soft uppers ice skates with the external rigid plastic frame, made by Rollerblade, for children & adults which could be the skate you were always looking for, but not available till about five years ago. Price $70.

Plymouth is located between Newfound Lake and Squam Lake. Newfound is probably the fourth largest NH lake, the deepest NH lake and the lake with the cleanest water while Squam is the second largest NH lake. Located at Rt 93-Exit 25, Plymouth is also home to Plymouth State University which is a large state university, and home to the Silver Center for the Arts.

With the very recent opening of the ice rink and the new Flying Monkey theatre, Plymouth is definately one of the most happening towns in the lakes region.

As far as I can tell, the three dollar- Cheap Skate got a good big turnout of local people for the three sessions that it was in place....but no more....at least for now...where-o-where did the $3 cheap skate go and will it ever come back?

What we have now is six dollar public skating with limited time slots for what used to cost three dollars, plus the comments section in the PSU ice arena website has been closed too.

So Plymouth State University...what ever happened to PSU wanting the new ice arena to be a good neighbor and welcome the local folks to ice skating?

Yes, it's true, the skateplymouthstate.com Ice Arena-Wednesday night, 6-8pm, ever-popular and well-attended three dollar Cheap Skate weekly skating event is indeed dead. Very sad to say, but the Cheap Skate is definately dead for now, however there are some halloween rumors fluttering about the very new, large and spacious PSU Ice Arena that the GHOST of the Cheap SKate is indeed alive and might just reappear, on a regular basis, sometime soon!

A little background information here:

For the first three Wednesday evenings in October 2010 of its short-lived life held at 6-8-pm, the two hour public skating event attracted about fifty ice skaters, out on the ice, which included about 25 adults and 25 children.

Then it happened, suddenly and unannounced, the Cheap Skate was placed on a "permanent vacation" until further notice.....if you know what I mean...

For about a week, some of the front desk - cash register supervisors said that the Arena was looking for a time slot to revive the Cheap Skate.....so does anybody know....is that just a line like a puff of ghost-like smoke....or will the Cheap Skate really return....meanwhile....off in the large and mostly empty spaces of this very brand new 14-million dollar ice arena....the ghost of the Cheap Skate is out there LURKING....you can acknowledge its' presence.....the Cheap Skate is definately gone but not forgotten by the fifty-plus weekly Plymouth skaters who were quick to attend its' first month inauguaral incarnation...

Will it ever return...will it ever return...will the $3 Cheap Skate ever return? (sung to 'Charlie on the MTA' by the Kingston Trio) It will circle forever on the smooth clear ice at the Arena as people come look'n to go skat'n....but are turned away unhappy when they learn of its' fate, that the Cheap Skate may never return......oh, poor old Charlie!
