Happy Thanksgiving!
We just picked up a 2002 center console with a Yamaha 150 HPDI outboard. We plan on leaving it at the lake year round. Any rec's on a top notch place to have the Yamaha serviced? THX RIWS |

Great engine, I previously owned a 2004 McKee Craft 196 center console with a 150 HPDI.
You might also consider New England Correct Craft down in Rochester, they are an excellent Yamaha certified shop. |

Dave Ewing (owner) at Dave's Motorboat Shoppe is your man....he is superb with all kinds of engines, but is a Yamaha dealer. Bought my 150 Yamaha from him and have had terrific experience with it.

Dave's Motorboat Shop is the man you want!! A very experienced man and a Yamaha dealer to boot!
BTW, anyone seen the very new V-Max SHO Yamaha motors??... Looks like they finally got the weight down in a four stroke. Very interesting to say the least. Dan Last edited by ishoot308; 11-26-2010 at 07:52 PM. |

Unfortunately for Dave....you'll probably never need him. That motor is one of the best on the planet and they rarely break down. Just routine service and it should last for many years.

I agree Sam. I have a 2004, Yamaha 225 HPDI, and never had a problem it. When I lost My Lower Unit this year, Dave was the one that order, replaced it very quickly, at a very good price, considering how expensive they are, and had me back on the water in just over a week. Also, Dave is a Hell of a nice guy too.

Ok, so if the Yamaha is sooooo good then how come it definately appears to seem from a casual observation of news photos that the US Coast Guard has come to use the Honda outboards as their go-to, first choice for large V6 outboards frequently used in pairs or even triple outboard installations?
"We just want an engine that works!" being the primary reason according to an unidentified Coast Guard lieutenant-jg. What does the NH Marine Patrol use? It uses a lot of two-stroke Mercury optimax outboards in 150-200-250 horse power, in singles and double installations, and some single Evinrude four-stroke 90-hp's that were probably made by Suzuki.

I think that the reason they use any particular brand of outboard is that they buy by volumn, and they've gone out to bid. Who ever sells at the highest bid wins the gov't contract. (the USN has been known to pay 5,000.00 for a claw hammer.)

The Coast Guard has a large number of outboard powered boats that use twin or even triple 200-250-hp V6 outboards, and they have probably tried every manufactorer's product in their quest to get a reliable engine that works for them. Maybe I'm wrong on this, but from the news photos it seems like they have settled on Honda for now.
Locally in Gilford come next summer, just take a look-see from the Gilford town docks at the aproximately 15 different MP boats tied to the docks and every one runs on a Mercury 2-stroke optimax 150-200-250, in a single or in a twin-rig. For the MP's smaller boats out on Squam, Newfound and many many other lakes, probably they use the smaller boats with the 90-hp Evin-Zukis: Suzuki on the inside, and Evinrude on the outside!

Most all mordern outboard manufacturers produce good reliable engines now. They are chosen by individuals or organizations for various reasons. Kind of like the Chevy /Ford debate! For me personally in four stroke, I like Yamaha. Especially their new lightweight V-max SHO. In two stroke I like the Rude Etec. I have two on two seperate boats and they have been very reliable, fuel and oil efficient, and extremely clean and green 100% EPA compliant with the lowest reportable emissions of any outboard brand even the four strokes! I also like Chevy's!! ![]() Dan |

Yes, the two-stroke E-tec seems like a big big success so they are probably a real good engine, and are probably a lot less heavy than any 4-stroke. Down in Boston, on the Charles River, at the Head of the Charles rowing event in October, I got a chance to look over a large Mass State Police patrol equipped w/ twin E-tecs.....so that to me says something for the E-tec ...

I have to agree with the majority here - Dave is the guy to go to. I have a 2001 Yamaha SX250Z (250 hp) - would not have anyone else even look at it - did once - what a mistake!
