I am not even a hockey fan but I have found myself tuning in to watch it quite a bit the last couple of weeks. I watched about half the game last night, would have watched the whole thing but our youngest son graduated form Junior High last night. Great to see a New England team bring home another championship. Go Bruins!!!!!!!!

AWESOME!!!! Having been raised in the Boston 'burbs, my three sons are avid Boston sports fans. So during the game my oldest son (in Seattle) and I were texting back and forth. He was out-of-his-mind giddy with excitement, to put it mildly!
Don't we all love the Gah-Den and those black and gold B's !!!!!!

Hockey has already seen a huge surge in the Boston area. There are a number of rinks that have gone up in the last few years (Breakaway Ice Center in Tewksbury, New England Sports Center in Marlboro). There are year round programs; Tim Thomas will be holding a goalie camp at Hockey Town in Saugus in early July.

I think that the Stanley Cup win will cause a lot of interest in goaltending with Tim Thomas being the MVP. My daughter is playing club hockey...yup, very popular with girls these days and they are actually quite good. One of her classmates was on the US U19 National gold winning team.

So, this is great for the area and great for the sport. Only took 39 years.

As much as I love the B's it would never be enough to skip a weekend at the lake unless it was a bad weekend weather wise, although it is bike weekend, so you might be on to something
I was in Boston last night with friends and we got a hotel room
But we watched the game went to celebrate, and the whole Boston Proper area was shut down and streets blocked off, also when we went to go to a bar to have a couple more, we could not get in anywhere because the mayor made them shut down when they hit capacity at the end of the second period. And even though people left the bars they were not allowed to let anyone else in

All that lost revenue in an economy like this, if I was a bar or restaurant owner, I would be seriously considering taking some action about all the lost revenue that happened because of this police state action, not even a law but a stern enforced request the mayor put out and sent the police to bars (witnessed it in many occaisions) to tell them to not let people in even if they were no longer to capacity

Also all down near the Garden all those streets with bars and restaurants on them were shut down and cleared out at the end of the game including fanuial Hall and government center

What a waste seriously would never go into the city again to witness something like a Sports Championship, shame on the Mayor for doing this, I think he caused more probelms

Yes have the police force and presence (fully agree with this) but no need to take money out of the pockets of the businessman

As I write I'm looking at a photo album of pictures of dad and myself with Phil Esposito, Ken Hodge, and Fred Stanfield around 1973 right after they won their last cup. Boy am I old!

I thought about that too. I graduated East Boston high school in 1971 and the Bruins won the Cup on either side (70 and 72) of that year. So, I really remember it well. Also. I was an avid hockey player, a rink rat if you will.

Anyways, my thought is that it will create a bump but not on the scale of which we saw in the 70's. In the 70's it caused such a large bump that many new hockey facilities were constructed to accommodate the interest in the sport. One of the problems with the sport today is the cost to play. It is extremely expensive. No other sport comes close in terms of cost of equipment.

I still skate and I just bought a new pair of Bauer skates a couple of months ago and they were $600.00 and they are not the top of the line skate.

This was a great win for the Bruins and they have a fine young team which I am sure will be in the thick of things for years to come. They had to win 3 7th games to capture the cup and all against three very good teams.

I will never forget the Bruins of the 70's and Bobby Orr, a lot of great memories there and the 2011 version has just given me another wonderful memory to cherish and the hope of many more.

Man, it's just awesome. As soon as we made it past Montreal in game 7, it just felt different.

AC, I think it has become fairly common place to suspend the serving of alcohol to as many people as possible in these highly contested types of games. Mostly to try and prevent what happened in Vancouver last night. They stopped serving in the downtown area in the middle of the 2nd period. Win or lose, the less drunk an amped up crowd is, the less likely for pack mentality type behavior.
It would suck to be a bar owner in that area and not being able to serve to all those happy people.

Does any one know any other Briuins, past/present that might frequent the lake? I'm pretty sure there is an older Bruin from the 70's team that owns a place on Winnisquam, can't remember who it is right now

I think that is what makes hockey great. The wife and I have watched easily over 200 games this season. Missed about 4 Bruins games and we will watch any other games that are on during the week. There are way to many good rivalries and matchups to not want to watch. That and we don't watch much for regular TV.

Sik, the CC&Gingers were flowing at our house as well. It is easier and less expensive to watch from home, plus the mix is always perfect.

Having our boat at West Alton Marina in 2001 - 2004 Don Sweeney used to frequent West Alton Marina. He was friend of one of the other boat owners there. He was quite fond of our Cocker Spaniel!

SIKSUKR....you will have fun. I worked in the Prudential Center in Boston up until about 4 yrs ago. It was great....we got to just leave the office...right in time...to see the parade. You will have fun. It is the whole experience of it. The crowd...the energy...the whole thing!

I tell my kids (15 & 17) that they are so lucky with all the WINS the Boston teams have brought them over the recent years. Finally, our favorite sport, our favorite team WON! We are heading in!

Every Saturday and Sunday throughout the summer they are repairing the bridges on 93 south between Stoneham and Boston. It has been a nightmare and should be avoided. Best bet would be to take the train in from Reading. Parking is free on weekends on it dumps you right at the Garden. If parking is full at the depot go into the furniture store across the street and I will set you up. Enjoy !!!

If I hadn't been silly and not thinking, I wouldn't have invited my SIL and BIL up for a pre-dad's day cookout and would be heading in there NOW to camp out with my son....... he thinks this is a "once in a lifetime" opp to see the Stanley Cup (tho he's only 15). However, I did manage to get up at 2:00 a.m. and listen to game 7 on the only live stream we could find...Vancouver's (hehehehehe). I'm definately bringing home the copy of La Gazzetta dello Sport with the picture of Tim Thomas hoisting the Cup.

OK...I was staying away from this thread...and probably for the wrong reasons. But I have a pretty good story.
1st of all, the reason for staying away is I simply have issues with the "johnny come lately, pink hats". The bandwagon jumpers. I've been a huge B's fan since 1974 (7 years old) watched every game that I could back in the 70's when mom thought I was asleep...remember???? channel 38 (WSBK) only. Black and white, ALWAYS fuzzy (no cable then), with tin foil wrapped around the rabbit ears to get better reception. Lived and died with them in the 80's...I hugged the TV, and ripped the cord clean off when Brad Park scored the OT game 7 gaol to beat Buffalo in 1984, TV was ruined...also,if you don't know who Peter Klima is, you are the people I am refferring to..if you do know, then you undestand my feelings. Also, if I say "blackout" game, a real B's fan knows what I mean.
It's just tough to follow the Finals with people who don't know what "off sides" means, when I was screaming about the lack of a PP, back in Dec, Jan, Feb.
I've been in a group that shares season ticket in section 2, row 13 since the building opened in 1995. No, I did not go to a Finals game, but saw game 5 of Montreal in person(argueably the most exciting game of the playoffs, double OT) and all 4 of the home Tampa Bay series in person.
Anyway...I just have difficulty sharing the moments with people who most likely watched 1 or 2 regaular season games at the most. Truth be told...there is room for everyone, and the issues are mis - guided. I understand that.
The story:
I wanted to see the cup in person, as I never have in my 44 years. However, fighting 1,000,000 on Saturday morning didn't seem like my best bet. So, although I was in Meredith, I decided Fenway Park on Sunday would be a nice way to go. Drive down alone, buy a cheap single, walk down to the lower boxes before the game, see The Cup, watch a few innings, and head back to Meredith.
What turned into a comedy of errors, quickly morphed into one on the most exciitng moments of my life.
Although I left enough time, 93 south is under construction from about Wilmington, to Stoneham...10/15 miles, 15MPH. Set me back. Tried the 2 parking lots at Fenway I use...both full. It's now 1:10. Pay $40 to park. Scurry quickly, to grab a cheapy on the street. Doesn't work, game is huge, scalpers want 75/100 for even a bad seat. I hear the anthem playing, and know time is short, and just about figure, "well, miss the ceremony, but continue on a search for a ticket, and watch some ball.
Here we go: I walk down Lansdown street at 1:35, and see the garage door leading into center field wide open (it is NEVER open), and State Police hanging around. I instantly figure that the duck boats are to come up Lansdown and turn left into the park. There are maybe 50/75 people hanging around the entrance...most people have already gone in, not wanting to miss the ceremony.
So, I run a sprint down Lansdown where there is simply noone. Empty sidewalks...thinking they must be coming from that direction. And three Duck boats turn the corner, where they are stopped by a police cruiser, who is waiting for the "all clear" sign from the cops up at the entrance. And I get a full 60/75 second private showing of The Cup, and talked to Chara, Tyler, and Timmy T. It gets better...
I asked Chara to lean over the side so I can touch The Cup...he says of course. I touch it, and he then says..."why don't you photo?"...and holds The Cup two feet from my face, looking me right in the eyes, and I snap the photo. I'll post it tomorrow...it's on a cell phone, and the cell phone stayed on the boat today.
The duck boats are stopped...so I walk to the next one and there is Tyler.
The next one...Timmy T. All I could think of was "Tim, I'll remember your game 5 Tampa save for the rest of my life"
He simply smiled and gave me a double thumbs up.
And off they rode.
And I was left thinking...wow, fate brought me to that moment, and gave me a private showing...even if only for a minute. I'll never forget it...although I'm sure a year from now it will seem less earth shattering. For now...I TOUCHED THE FREAKIN' STANLEY CUP!!!!!!!!!!!

The Parade was insane!!! After the parade was over we were swimming at the apartment complex where Tyler Seguin lives. He showed up about an hour later. Let me tell you he is the absolute nicest kid. He was so good to my kids!!! Here he is swimming with my son and my niece. He was making them laugh and joking with them in the pool.

I agree about the "new fans", but remember one thing, we were all new at some point. I have only been a fan since the Neely, Moog, Sweeney days, but then again, I was 3 in 1984.

It is still great and is something that I will remember vividly. Just wish that the NBC crew was not so biased toward Vancouver through the whole series and had more excitement when the cup was won.

So the pic that I posted has a story of course:

My brother works for the company that owns several high end luxury apartment buildings in New England. One of those buildings just so happens to be right down the street from the Garden. Naturally many players live there. We were able to watch the parade from a private balcony right on the parade route. The balcony was eye level with the players on the Duck Boats. Really just the time of my life. I had chills throughout the whole parade. My highlight was watching Neely hold the cup on the Duckboat. He was with Chara and Chara handed it to him. I was numb. Anyway after the parade we were swimming at the apartment complex pool with the kids. Next thing you know Tyler Seguin walks into the pool area with some friends. This is literally an hour maybe after the parade was over. There were only 20 or so people around the pool and they were not fans as they did not even know who this kid was. So I walk over with my boys and ask if we could get a picture with him. He was so accommodating and just so nice to my twins. After the picture he hung out and talked with my kids. Then he was swimming and playing with my kids in the pool. Awesome!!! Just Awesome!!!!

Side note: The rest of the team was headed for Foxwoods and the 19 year old kid was playing in a pool with my kids.

NBC was OK...Mike Emrick is truly THE GOD of hockey announcers. Loved him forever. Although, when ESPN had the contract, I enjoyed Gary Thorne very much. Who can ever forget his call of Ray Bourke getting his Cup.
As for the fan thing...I love new fans, who ask questions, and want to understand.
What I just cannot tolerate, is the newbie storts bar people, who say something like "oh, I'm a big Bruins fan. We love them." And then follow it up with the most foolish of statements...ie., "oh, what is this iceing, and off sides??? It ruins the game. They should not have that" UUUmmm, yeah, OK.
And, "oh, the playoffs are too long. They should have shorter series". Just clueless, Johnny come Latelys, who would never even think of watching an NHL playoff game if it did not include the Bruins...and even then, watch with one eye.
I far more respect the person that says..."I never watch hockey, or the Bruins, but love the fun of these moments".
It just drives me bananas, which is why I stay away, and watch and discuss with like minded people.
And feel as though I was fully entitled to the moment the hockey gods bestowed upon me on sunday afternoon at 1:35.

Although on many an occasion, I don't agree with your posts, I thoroughly enjoyed your original post and subsequent pictures. I am an "over 50" guy.

I've been through it all with all of the Boston sports teams from the 70's through today. Too many years of disappointment over those 40+ years and in this case, 39 years, have me labeled in my circle of friends as the cynical non-Boston sports fan. That is not the case. I used to watch them all. With the exception of the NFL and the Patriots, the other three are a "take it or leave it" proposition for me. Do I watch an occasional Red Sox game? Sure do. Celtics? Maybe. Bruins? Hardly ever. I used to watch them all...a lot.

When the Bruins made the playoffs it didn't even make a blip on my radar screen. I didn't jump on the bandwagon even though some of those "pinkhats" (including my wife) were there. I subscribe to your line of thinking that you can't just jump in the pool because the water is nice. I got a tremendous amount of grief from my friends for not watching all (or any) of the playoff games.

Don't get me wrong. I think it is great that the Bruins finally won the cup again. It is a huge accomplishment for any major sports team. It is great for Boston and New England in general. Hats off to all of you true Bruins fans. You deserve this celebration and the after glow this week is providing.

SA I agree with you on this. Even though I am not a hockey fan I am a New England sports fan so I enjoyed watching the last half of game 7 because it was a Boston team that won it. Even though I did not watch a Bruins game during the regular season I do check the standings on occasion to see how they are doing. As you are a true Bruin's fan I am extremely happy for you and anyone like you that they brought home the cup.Like I said I am not a hockey fan but I hope you don't put me in the same group as the "johnny come lately's" but as the person who doesn't watch hockey but just love the fune of these moments.

Although on many an occasion, I don't agree with your posts, I thoroughly enjoyed your original post and subsequent pictures. I am an "over 50" guy.

I've been through it all with all of the Boston sports teams from the 70's through today. Too many years of disappointment over those 40+ years and in this case, 39 years, have me labeled in my circle of friends as the cynical non-Boston sports fan. That is not the case. I used to watch them all. With the exception of the NFL and the Patriots, the other three are a "take it or leave it" proposition for me. Do I watch an occasional Red Sox game? Sure do. Celtics? Maybe. Bruins? Hardly ever. I used to watch them all...a lot.

When the Bruins made the playoffs it didn't even make a blip on my radar screen. I didn't jump on the bandwagon even though some of those "pinkhats" (including my wife) were there. I subscribe to your line of thinking that you can't just jump in the pool because the water is nice. I got a tremendous amount of grief from my friends for not watching all (or any) of the playoff games.

Don't get me wrong. I think it is great that the Bruins finally won the cup again. It is a huge accomplishment for any major sports team. It is great for Boston and New England in general. Hats off to all of you true Bruins fans. You deserve this celebration and the after glow this week is providing.

Or how about two years later, the Nordiques take out the B's in 7, and as the game ends, a scrum breaks out, and out of frustration, O'Reilly pops the ref in the head on purpose. Punched him good.
And how about Mike Moffet, and his two weeks of being a rock star in this town...bonus points for anyone who knows or remembers his story, without using google.
Who didn't love the late 70's line of McNabb centering Wensink and O'Reilly. Grit.
Watching Miller the enforcer in the early 80's.
PJ Stock just a few years back. Lot's of fun and pure tourture over the years...and it all paid off this season.
Still don't understand not going to Seguin on the PP...just don't get it.
By the way...you said you enjoyed my photos. But just the one posted under my name is mine. Chara holding the Cup for me...and only me to photo. Did I feel privileged and a little bit entitled? You're dam right I did.

For myself, I'm am the opposite of a pink hat. The first pro sports team I liked was the Boston Bruins. At 10 yo I was given a 10 b&w tv. We did not have cable then so I got a uhf antenae and climbed my steep roof outside my bedroom window to attach it to the regular mast. My buddy sat in front of that tv while I turned and twisted it to get the best picture we could. What that meant was that we could see the skaters moving up and down the ice but could not see the puck. Did that for 4 years until we got cable but that was after 2 cups in 69 and 70. As I write I have a photo album with pics of myself posing with Phill Esposito, Ken Hodge and Fred Stanfield. Carlton Fisk also but he's not relevent here. This was right after the 72 cup and it was the thrill of my life. They were all hired to endorse our hotdogs.
Fast forward to 2011 and now finally another cup. To say I was a little teary and full of goose bumps watching the cup raised in front of me with the team so pumped would be an understatement. I was suddenly 12 and 14 years old again.

My hat is off to both of you for hanging in there for all of those 39 years that I didn't. BTW, I went to High School with Johnny Bucyk's daughter and Terry O'Reilly lived in my town back then as did Ray Bourque at a different time.

As a Sox season ticket holder for 25 years, the only issue I have with the pink hats is when they won't shut the f@ck up and watch the game. Otherwise, sure they may not know who Joe Lahoud is, but the more the merrier.

My Sox tickets were $11 each when I got em. They're now $95
