American Restoration meets Funspot

For those of you who are fans of the show American Restoration the new season opened with an episode featuring the kiddie ride Sea Skate from Funspot. Sea skate, originally purchased for $100.00 has been a working ride at Funspot for over fifty years and has been enjoyed by an estimated 300,000 kids. Cost of the restoration was $8000.00. I have never had the pleasure of meeting the gentleman who owns Funspot but he sure came across as a real nice man on T.V. The show is On Demand if you would like to catch it. The picture is of my two oldest children approx 25 years ago.

I met the owner last year while my family and I were playing mini-golf. I had known who he was and while he was sitting outside I mentioned just how nice all of the golf holes and displays looked. He had a great look of pride and joy after I said that. He didn't have to, but he proceeded to give my kids a free game pass. You'd had thought it was a million bucks to them.

Love Funspot, always have!

I saw that episode by accident actually. It was great I was wondering where that little boat came from when they started and then I said Wow I knew it looked familiar

Funspot's owner and co-founder Bob Lawton is a real nice man. He had told me last spring that his Sea Scape Kiddie ride would be featured on a future episode of American Restoration. Of course, somehow I missed the show featuring the Sea Scape's restoration. But fortunately, it may still be viewed on the program's website which is: http://www.history.com .
I was also very much pleased that the Sea Scape project was dedicated to Bob's late brother John, with whom Bob founded Funspot over 50 years ago.
Bob and his magnificent Funspot Arcade are real treasures of our Lakes Region.

So, this little episode about the Ski Skate got me thinking about the history of FunSpot. My husband & I were trying to remember when FunSpot started - so I went to the history section of their website and came across this neat little "time line" presentation of FunSpot:

Not to derail this thread but what happened to Storybook in Meredith, NH that was owned by Lawton?

(If you go through the slideshow that NHKathy links to, you'll see mention of it. I have a photo of myself from 1976 at the "Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe" and I thought it was from StoryLAND... I now recall Storybook. And I have an Indian maiden doll from the Indian Village from that trip... wow. I was 5 years old... What a memory!)

Check out this great video of the Bob Lawton, owner of Funspot, on American Restoration.

Rick Dale and his gang perform a wonderful restoration on the 1953 Sea Skate kiddie boat ride, which Bob and his brother purchased back in 1960 for $100.

Rick Dale has done it again for Funspot.

On tonight's episode, Bob Lawton had Rick restore a Shoot The Bear arcade game that was built in the late 1940's. I think the restoration cost was $12,000. That's a lot of Funspot tokens.
