Bear Island Pictures circa 1900-1914?

A few of us are trying to explore the history of the "first families" of Bear Island. We are looking for any pictures of the structures, camps, docks, families and the island from the turn of the last century.

Please let me know if you have any pictures/movies. We will handle and all specimens with the utmost care, and we will credit appropriately as our project moves forward.

In the early 1950,'s there was a small store at the post office. They had the best peppermint ice cream.

Great postcard pics. Thanks for posting. It was a time when men were gentlemen (per suits) and ladies were modest in their dress!

Black suits with a tie and full length dresses on a summers day. Sounds like heat stroke to me.

It was cooler then--remember, everyone walked to and from school in ten feet of snow. Uphill BOTH ways.

Great pics BI. Have not seen any of them before. Goes to show that even with all the development we've had in NH, there is still way more forest than a century ago since everything was that logged and wide open spaces for agriculture have both been regrown.

Thanks. Is there still an observation tower as shown in the last picture? I don't recall anyone speaking about it recently. If not, when did it get taken down. Thanks again.

No intention to hijack a thread here:

I always remark at how all the old photos around the lake show wide open land on the shorefront. Now completely covered in trees and brush.

One thinks about the political agenda about the shoreline protection act and what not

Decided on my own to start a new thread with it sorry for posting it here please don't post replies to this here

The tower is still there but is now part of the St. John's On The Lake Chapel.

They literally built the chapel around the tower.

Tower built 1900. Chapel built around tower in 1927. The full history at this link.
