A few of us are trying to explore the history of the "first families" of Bear Island. We are looking for any pictures of the structures, camps, docks, families and the island from the turn of the last century.
Please let me know if you have any pictures/movies. We will handle and all specimens with the utmost care, and we will credit appropriately as our project moves forward. |

I have some old Bear Island postcards on my website.
http://www.bearisland.org/postcards.htm The third postcard shows the old Mt. Washington at the Mail Dock. The future location of my cabin is between the sailboats. |

In the early 1950,'s there was a small store at the post office. They had the best peppermint ice cream.

Great postcard pics. Thanks for posting. It was a time when men were gentlemen (per suits) and ladies were modest in their dress!

Great pics BI. Have not seen any of them before. Goes to show that even with all the development we've had in NH, there is still way more forest than a century ago since everything was that logged and wide open spaces for agriculture have both been regrown.

They were dressed that way because it was cold. See what 100 years and global warming has done!

No intention to hijack a thread here:
I always remark at how all the old photos around the lake show wide open land on the shorefront. Now completely covered in trees and brush. One thinks about the political agenda about the shoreline protection act and what not Decided on my own to start a new thread with it sorry for posting it here please don't post replies to this here
