Phantom 3 Drone

Check out youtube. tons of videos with tips and tricks. Practice in an open field. The phantoms are pretty easy to fly, you can actually take your hands off the controller and it will just hover rather than fall like a stone. 1-2 days and I think you will be pretty comfortable with it.

As Winnisquamer said, these are made to be very user friendly and easy to fly. It has a "beginner mode" built in that will not allow you to fly outside a 100x100' box... Definitely a good place to start. And I agree that flying over an open field is the best way to start getting acquainted with the sensitivity of the controller and responsiveness of the drone.

On another note - get used to looking at your phone/ipad/etc when flying instead of looking at the drone itself. Trying to steer it while looking at the drone in the sky can be disorientating and result in a crash (don't ask me how I know that).

You can also change the remote control settings to reflect whatever you think is the easiest/most sensible set up. For example, the left joystick can be set to control forward/backward, and side to side movement while the right joystick controls altitude and left/right turning or vice versa. Go with whatever feels most natural to you or whatever will be easiest for you to remember.

After your first couple flights in beginner mode you will have enough understanding of how it works to venture out a little further. And then you'll be addicted like myself.

Just got the Phantom 3 myself at Best buy for $500. Love it! Can't wait to take it up to the lake for photos.

Has anyone tried the new Phantom 4? With collision avoidance it seems pretty sweet. I have been itching for a Phantom, I may make the leap.

And when you do get one, or for anyone who already has one and wants to get some action shots my crew wouldn't mind one bit if you wanted to use my boat and us as dummys! Wakesurf, wakeskate, wakeboard, waterski, foil, footin, tube, pick the sport and well do it!

P4 collision avoidance is not a solution to all problems, so don't rely on it.

Keep in mind that almost all of the lake is within 5 miles of many airports around the lake and therefore could be a 'no fly zone'.

Be sure to get the 'hover' app or the B4UFly app (or both) and check yourself before you take off, don't be "That guy" that ends up on WMUR or the national news.

Don't drop your drone in the lake, they don't like water.

Practice in an open area, away from trees, and don't get your back against anything like a fence, house, etc. You need to be able to get away if you screw up and have this thing heading towards your face.

Until you have a LOT of experience, be sure to have the 'front' / 'nose' / 'camera' pointed away from you always before taking off or landing. This is key to not getting screwed up where left/right front/back is reversed from what you expect.

Consider joining a local RC model aircraft flying club where you can get tips from people that have a lot of experience flying these things.
