Low flying transport plane

Does anyone know anything about the Air Force transport plane that flew over last evening. We are on Rattlesnake Island and one flew over extremely low early last evening, much lower than any of us had ever experienced.

i've seen c-130's land at the laconia airport before. was it a 130 (propeller, non-jet engines)?

C-130's routinely fly over the lake. This is part of a training route flown by planes, as well as helicopters.

Saw it flying low over Ctr Harbor last night around 6pm very low. Cool to see. Air Force jets have been doing maneuvers a couple days this week above Ctr Harbor/Meredith. They're fun to watch too, if you can find them in the sky. The engine sounds from them are very loud. Saw a refueling jet yesterday too. They must be cleaning out the hangers

There is military training airspace nearby so sometimes I hear the fighters up there having fun, rarely see them though.

A C 130 is a very large airplane that may appear lower than it actually is, at 1,000 feet above ground level it will seem much lower. I wish I had seen it.

It flew very low directly over our heads as we ate outside at our place on Moultonboro Neck last night. It was pretty cool to see it so low!

I like it when the A-10 (Warthogs) fly over the area. I heard they are out of Vermont.

Oh who was that GENERAL that wanted to retire the A-10 for something NEW and BETTER, say maybe some 20+ years ago?

There are two Military Operations Areas (MOA's) in the White Mountains which are a dedicated air space for the military to practice maneuvers with a reduced risk of impacting civilian/commercial aircraft. Non-military aircraft can transit the area as they're not always active ("hot"), but that's why we see so many military aircraft operating over the lake.

You can see from the map the magenta line with the perpendicular lines, inside of that is the MOA which goes over a bit of the lake. Typical aircraft we'll see are F-16's from the VT Air National Guard, F-15's from the MA Air National Guard, A-10's from the CT Air National Guard, and C-130's from various units but commonly the RI National Guard and NY National Guard.

We didn't see it but we sure heard and felt it fly over our neighborhood! Sounded like it was barely above the trees!

Don't they live at Grenier Field which is very close to Rye Beach and they are basically a 'flying gas station.'

Granier Field is the original name of the Manchester Boston Airport.

The re-fueling squadron flies KC-135 (military 707) out of Pease (Portsmouth). They are transitioning to something new, but I can't recall what.

They will be getting the new KC-46 tankers, and a new hanger is being constructed to house the new plane during maintenance. The Squadron is highly decorated and achieves high grades during their inspections and I believe the only AF Air Guard / Reserve unit to get the new KC46's. Back to your regular scheduled program .

They are going to the 777's, should be a sweet ride..

Actually, the KC46 is based on the Boeing 767 airframe. Still will be a great ride.

great ride, yes, absolutely. in terms or refueling though, based on what i've seen, in the new tanker the boom operator does the refueling from the front of the aircraft via a video screen instead of being in the boom pod in the back looking out a window. to me, that takes all the fun out of it. plus, you just can't get as good of a feel for depth perception using a computer screen vs. looking out of a window. that might be especially challenging at night or in bumpy conditions.

i'd be curious to see the cargo loading operations as well.

I have always wondered about this. I used to work at a farm on route 113 and saw low flying military aircraft almost every day! Do you know where the planes come from?

The type pictured here would do flybys almost everyday of the Manchester airport and fly over my building. Very distinct sound with military grey colors.

Check out VT National Guard out of Colchester, VT. Perhaps...
