.......yawnnnnnn......is a little too chilly to be doing the dock-out thing this morning.....think I'll wait for the big warm-up before I hit the dock.....yawn.....sitting in the 104-degree hot tub and looking at the dock is a lot easier than removing dis damned dock.....so where the H is global warming.....come on back global warming.....and gimme some heat.....yawnnnnn!
The lake will ice over between January 5, and January 10 ...... as usual.....thank you very much.

Good morning. I looked at the webcam on the northwest shore of Lake Wentworth and it is skimmed over this A.M. With the snow that is forcast and another cold snap later next week, I would expect our lake to freeze solid next week.

Dropped my temperature probe in Merrymeeting a little while ago. The reading was a consistent 38 degrees. But as others are noting, I think we are looking at a quick and relatively early ice-in this year.
Ice is already forming on structures along the shoreline, the ground at the waters edge is frozen, and there are few moments above freezing in the 10-day forecast. We drove from Manchester today and saw many smaller lakes and ponds, even near Manchester, solidly frozen. Half Moon Lake in Alton looked to be completely covered in a thick layer. Even the Merrymeeting Marsh and River at the Alton Circle is largely skimmed over, despite the movement. It won't be long. |

Blackies cove was iced over this morning, took about a half hour for my circulator to break through, so I'd guess almost 2 inches already. Parts of Center Harbor iced over too. It would be really nice if those areas locked up for the winter.

Overnight, we went from ice free in front of my house to now having slushy ice from the shoreline to about 100 yards out. There is no wind to break it up so I expect it will continue to work its way further out. At least until the predicted winds tonight beat it back.
But, the temps are clearly close as the falling snow is not melting immediately after hitting the water. With forecast temps in the teens and single digits (-1 on Thursday night! ![]() |

Seeing ice and snow on the webcams is killing me down here in NC. I can't wait to get up there this winter. My dad said our place on Hermit Lake is locked up for as far as he could see.

I've got 36.05 degrees at Trexler's. I can't wait to see the temperature drop over the next couple days.

For $3.19, Walmart has Intex floating mercury thermometers designed for a pool, hot tub, lake, or ocean. It floats and has a small hole designed for attaching a thin line at the flotation top so it can be hung from dock, down into the water. Seems to be well made, easy to use, easy to read, and accurate.
As of today, Thursday, May 25, 2017, the Lake Winnipesaukee water temperature is 57 and 3/4-degrees, at the surface, which is pretty chilly but actually warm enough on a hot, sunny day to be wading out up to one's neck, but is too cold for swimming without a wet suit. That hot, warm sun, sure makes a big huge difference .....huge! Wonder if that floating water monitor buoy at Weirs Beach, which was started last summer-2016, which reports the water temp on the internet is up and running again, courtesy of the United States Dept of the Weather?

Water temp is 58-degrees, today, June 4 ...... not exactly tropical ....but doable for wading and swimming in shallow water up to neck deep with a short sleeve-short leg wetsuit, wetsuit socks, water shoes, and wetsuit hat and a swimmers belt.
If you wait till the water gets up to 70, you could be waiting till some time in July ..... especially this year! Someone should invent a low cost heat source for using inside a wet suit? Something like a flat, light weight, object, about the length and width of a 3x5x3/4" sponge, just like hot oatmeal which absorbs heat when heated in a microwave oven, and then slowly radiates the heat out for one hour, and can be used inside a wet suit. Seems like a device for the miitary to create that could be used for recreational swimming in Lake Winnipesaukee when the water is too cold for comfortable swimming which is about nine months per year. A heat oatmeal sponge.......just heat it in the microwave for 2-minutes.....place it inside your wet suit.... and it stays 85-degree warm for one hour, and has the power to keep icy cold water warm inside a wet suit......what a great invention ...... available in regular, or maple sugar flavor ..... and can be eaten in very small bites in an emergency situation, like when you get hungry ..... a hot oatmeal, wet suit sponge....with the natural power of oatmeal.....your U S military research/design at work! .... tastes great and keeps you warm in your wet suit! ![]()

while last year was wamer by this time, there was a crazy cold front that chilled things down to the temps that they are today. The good news was that last year recovered quickly with some warm weather (just like the weather we are forecasted to see next week).

It looks that the lake has warmed up six degrees, going from 58 up to today's 64, in one week, from June 4 to June 11.
So, what's the difference between 58, and 64 degrees ....... well ..... it is a huge, totally huge difference! At 58, I need to wear a shorty wet suit, and at 64, it is wading friendly and pretty much swim-able with just a bathing suit without being really painful. One gets used to 64-degree water pretty quick. Today's sunshine and air temp of 92-degrees probably has a lot to do with making 64-degree water swim-able.

Water broke 70 degrees today! That's a 15 degree gain in one week. It will probably drop a bit over night, but tomorrow is looking good too.

For $224.99 sz xxl, or 246.04 sz xl, reg price $299.99, the swimoutlet.com has a men's heated wetsuit vest, sizes xl & xxl, that is powered by a 7.4v lithium battery.... a RipCurl Men's H-Bomb Heated Wetsuit Vest.... what do you know ...... a heated vest? Hopefully, it lives up to its' H-Bomb name and is warm, warm, warm ..... like a nuclear powered wet suit .... even warmer than oatmeal!
Ok, .......so, I could not resist, and I ordered one. A heated wet suit vest sounds interesting and could maybe be good for sailing small, wet sailboats like a 12' Laser Pico, or a 14' Force Five or a stand up paddle board or a kayak, or swimming, when the water temperature is cold enough, like 35-60 degrees, to be dangerous killer cold ..... will have to try one out starting this summer and get good with it as the water cools down in Sept-Oct-Nov-Dec...... time will tell? One thing is for sure ...... when you are freezing cold and wet and floating about out there in water over one's head, all alone, you immediately know that it is cold .... like, no kidding! A cup of coffee holds 8-ounces of hot coffee ..... but getting just 5-ounces of cold water down your throat, into your lungs .... is enough to get yourself drowned dead .... and not wearing a good pfd with a wet suit most likely makes it a panic situation. Even with a wet suit, it's still cold ..... cold is cold! www.heatedwetsuitreviews.com

Starting today the USGS has resumed reporting the lake temp. and other data from the buoy at Weirs Beach. I get an email report every day that makes it much easier for me to post the temperatures. I'll try to post it every day but unfortunately the reports are only provided from June through September.
Here's today's report with a link where you can sign up for the email reports and choose the data you're interested in: Quote:

The water temperature at East Bear Island has soared to seventy degrees today. Several boats towing gleeful tubers have passed by. Oh to be young again!!! 🐻

Much to my surprise but the water temp at 24 feet on the deck of The Lady of the Lake was 64 degrees F last night at 7PM.

The Broads was wild today. Leaving Wolfeboro Bay, we were rockin' and rollin'. We ducked behind and around Diamond Island and continued to The Lady of the Lake where we enjoyed our first dive of the day. Temperature on the deck of "The Lady" was 70. The thermocline was at about 28 feet. Several good sized small mouth bass and a bunch of rock bass were seen.
We dove the circular rock pile (Abrams Rock) in Wilder's Cove (near Rum Pt in Alton) as our second dive. The first thermocline was at 47 feet. Temp above was 70, below was about 64. Typical at this site at this time of year. In contrast, the temp at 45 feet last Sunday on the Pile Driver Barge in Weirs Bay was 50. Also typical for this time of year. Rough as it was, it was a great day to be on and under the water of Lake Winni.

September 10th, and the lake water temperature is down to 68, so shorty wet suit time is already here, this year. The lake surface water is unusually cool for Sept 10 ...... like, where's the September, hot, dry heat that was experienced the last few years? Is more cooler than in 2016, and 2015. For most water goers, below 70-degrees is wanting to use a shorty wet suit for paddle boarding or small sailboats......where you can get dunked.
If you get flipped off a sailboat into 60-degree water while wearing just a swimsuit ...... and not a wet suit .....you will be moving very fast ....to get back to the safety of your over turned sailboat......or paddle board. Sixty degree water temp is cold! Hey there Hurricane Irma ...... oh, please send us here in central New Hampshire .......some of that hot, humid Florida heat ...... Irma!
