Security Cam advice

My son is going to be coming home after school on his own, so I've been thinking of adding a camera or two to the house. Is it possible to have just one in front and one in back, or might we need one at each entrance, like the garage, etc.?

Also, any idea on how long wireless/cordless ones last or can they be run off an outdoor light?

Finally, I like the no-subscription thing, but, in general, how does one know there's been "an event"?
