Sandwich Internet?

I was reading an Associated Press article this morning concerning the difficulties some people were having in getting high speed Internet from their homes in various parts of the country. One of the people interviewed was a women from Sandwich, NH. I was unaware that dialup or satellite internet were the only choices for Sandwich. Anyone know?

Sandwich selectmen have said that any cable company that comes to Sandwich, must cover every house. Not economically feasible. M'boro allowed Amrac cable (as you might remember) come in years go and cover the neck, 25 and 109, and eventually (after many buyouts) grow to what it is today.

Guess you haven't lived in M'boro very long. The owner of Amrac owned a house on the neck and put together and installed a cable system in town. I know for sure, because they were customers of mine here for many years.

Internet research can get you so only far. Do you know who owned the Adelphia system, in M'boro, before Adelphia ? Maybe the internet knows

We had cable service before Adelphia, and I am trying to remember the name of the company. Their office was in a building next to Skelley’s. My brain is being taxed...does anyone remember?

The answer is State Cable, who bought it from Amrac. By this point, Amrac was into Tuftonboro and Ossipee (parts thereof) also.

It was Pegasus in Moultonborough....in the 80s.

I stand corrected, Pegasus was sandwiched in there too, among the other companies. Thanks! Amrac installed the initial system.

My first home, vacation home, was in 1974, on the island.

I stopped using Direct TV, that I installed on my roof, after Adelphia started offering. Direct TV, at that time, came in a box that you self installed (cost was $40 I believe).

Did he have a cable contract with the town, as required by law?

Adelphia was the name of the cable company, as the town contract indicates, since 2001.

Were these cable companies or fixed wireless internet companies! They are far from being the same.

Were they ISP's (internet service providers).?

Found this:

Pegasus took over the cable system from Amrac Cable Television in 1991. It serves about 7,000 subscribers in Winsted, Harwinton, Colebrook, New Hartford, Barkhamsted and the western portion of Hartland.

Spectrum has at least 100 Mbps of broadbband running along Sheridan Rd., as well as the "TV" part of a cable company.

There are HOA's (home owner associatioins) on Sheridan Dr. that do not have because of lack of lines (fiber or otherwise) into the sites /homes .

In other words, broadband is going right by the entrance to their development. They do not have lines, and Spectrum won't put in because of their "home density" guidelines. If they have phone landlines from Consolidated Communications they can probably get DSL. Strike that, if there are not enough homes to justify for the phone company ( no DSLAMS).

It was Amrac, Pegasus (thanks SDN), State, Adelphia, Time Warner then Spectrum. I have no interest to find a Google link, talk to some other old timers here in M'boro that were involved in communications/IT.

Yes, it was a sanctioned cable system... visit the town offices and research it. Talk to one of the selectmen that were around then.

They were cable companies, I owned the only town fixed wireless system (at the time) and did so for decades, so yes, I know the differences.

IIRC, Pegasus introduced a .5M internet, and it grew in capacity as other owners bought it.

I'm really thru with this thread, except for questions about Sandwich.

I did research the town website. Unfortunately, they did a system change several years ago and I do not believe all of the archives was captured.

The development starting at Sachem road, off of Sheridan Rd has no cable, not because of density but because underground conduit for cable wasn't installed when the development was built and the HOA won't allow poles. There is DSL there, but it comes off the Sandwich exchange and is beyond the supported distance, so bits flow in a trickle. This is the situation that started the M'boro communication fund, built up from the cable franchise fees. Yet, while the fund has paid to upgrade speeds to over 40 homes, that neighborhood still is unserved. It would be a good spot for a pole-mounted fixed wireless antenna, but Spectrum isn't interested.

Is it the HOA, or the HOA bylaws? How about buried cable from the street?

The HOA bylaws can be changed by the members.

If it is the HOA members ... so be it!

Please don't petition the NHEC, however. Placing fiber on the street poles won't help.
