CONCORD, N.H. -- New Hampshire may look a little crowded this fall.

A report for state tourism officials predicts that about 7.6 million visitors will come to the state during the fall tourism season and spend more than $1 billion.

The Institute for New Hampshire Studies is expecting a better season this year than last, with visitor spending likely to increase by 3 percent and the number of visitors expected to be about 2 percent higher.


The institute expects Labor Day weekend to be the best ever, with about 550,000 visitors expected to spend about $75 million.

Meanwhile, the state recently received an institute report on last spring's tourism season, which showed more visitors and more spending than last year.

Rooms and meals tax data and traffic counts indicate there were about 6.56 million visitor trips, up by 1.1 percent from the spring of 2005, and that visitors spent about $818 million, 2.3 percent more than the previous spring.

Last time I checked "the media" was composed entirely of humans. Humans are more than capable of mistakes, bias and outright deceit. So I'll always be skeptical. This doesn't mean that all media reports are lies, but it does mean they're not all true.

I think jrc is looking for anecdotal observations from the lake itself, and not "the news" which could be a cut-and-paste from the NH Chamber of Commerce.

What station(s) is it?

Lake Winnipesaukee gets an occasional mention on Boston's "Howie Carr Show", 680AM, WRKO. (Heard on Winnipesaukee, and also available on the Internet—worldwide).

His producer presents an annual segment titled, "Stupid Things I Did While Boating Drunk".

I was surprised to hear the same theme again this August, as last year's segment had ended suddenly when callers tearfully described boating tragedies in their families.

This year's callers must have been screened, as most were of the variety,
"Hold My Beer and Watch This...."

In other not-widely-known-news is that a large rafting party is scheduled for Winnipesaukee's Badger Island this Sunday. It is expected to have a sizable contingent from out of state: let's see how that party speaks to jrc's question.

Are you referring to a large bright yellow boat - owned by a fellow named "C. Kelley". He had a place on Paugus Bay and passed away some time ago. The name "Fountain of Youth" was across the sides of his boat.

He also owned a cabin cruiser that would anchor near the Long Island Bridge in the late eighties.

Thanks Lake Lady 6, that'd be the boat. I never knew the owner personally, its just one of my favorite memories of the lake. I'd bet he was doing the same thing I was, enjoying one last quite moment with the "smile of the great spirit" before the season ended. Sad to hear of his passing, and thanks for the info.
