Depends on the surface... but painted metal I have used the WD40 method.

My most recent method has been a chainsaw.
Pine trees are of limited value to the cottage. I leave a few on the lower property far from the house for raptors to nest in.

Most of them grow too tall to provide meaningful wind protection that short to medium shrubbery can provide.
