A quick look online shows replacement antennas that purport to give improved accuracy. Installation should be easier than soldering in a new battery which may or may not be 100% successful. A mistake could mean buying new anyway...$200-$350?

I agree, and they are more accurate.
But a new battery is $10. Vs cost of a new unit. If you damage it installing the battery, you'll need to buy a new one anyway. Mine is still working well on the lake after replacing the battery.
