A family member thinks we should have a composting toilet in the bunkhouse which otherwise has electricity, but no plumbing. Experience? Suggestions? TIA

Just got back from several days on the island. 20 years ago we built a bunkhouse with a Centrex 3000 composting toilet with a 1 pint flush unit.
Because the unit was quite bulky we raised the height of the building to accommodate it underneath. This weekend we had 3 granddaughters my wife and myself using it with no issues. Crank it in reverse at the beginning of the season and the compost falls into a drawer to be removed. Crank it forward at the end of each weekend before you leave and add fine peat moss. The toilet area is partitioned off as a separate room. The unit was installed with a 4 inch vent through the roof with a diffuser on top of the stack. This unit also has a 15 watt fan to create a vacuum so no odors. Works great. I called DES before I installed and they said because it is not a subsurface system they had no jurisdiction. One caveat might be that with excessive use of flushing water there might be need to drain it. We have never had that problem. There is also a heating element in ours that would help with increasing evaporation although we have never needed to use it. Guessing that now with installation and a toilet it would be around 5k. https://sun-mar.com/us/product/centrex-3000/ |

Pretty sure today’s version are self contained and MUCH easier to live with.
